7 Survival Tips for Mercury Retrograde

Well, it is happening again. It’s that time once more. From August 30th until September 22nd Mercury is going retrograde for the third time this year! What’s that? You haven’t heard about the Mercury retrograde? The Mercury retrograde is a three-week period when the planet Mercury appears to be traveling backwards, but it’s merely an optical illusion. And why does this matter? Simple: because it affects you. How does it affect you? In more ways than you can imagine.

Mercury is the planet of communication and when it is in retrograde, nearly everything involving communication can go awry. Everyone around you will appear to have gone crazy. You may get into more arguments during this time, even if they are about nothing at all! Electronics such as your phone and computer may be on the fritz. If you are traveling, you may want to double-check your flights because your plans may be delayed or your train may not arrive on time. Also, during the retrograde, it’s advised to not sign any contracts or make any huge decisions.

Despite all of the warnings, do not worry! I am here to offer some tips to help you survive this upcoming Mercury retrograde.

1. Back up your data and any electronics.

This “ruler of communication” planet can get a little funny with your devices. In today’s world, it is hard to not communicate via texting, Facebook post, email, or even an archaic phone call. That being said, be careful and mindful of your devices. Could you really go three weeks, let alone a day, without your phone?

2. Do not purchase any expensive item.

Now, you are free to do as you will, but if you purchase a big-ticket item there are likely to be more problems and flaws with it that you may not be aware of. You can, naturally, choose to buy what you wish, but make sure you get a warranty or keep the receipt in case.

3. Do your research before agreeing and committing to anything.

Life cannot and does not stop just because of a planetary optical illusion. However, if you are about to accept a job, sign a contract, or team up for an assignment, make sure you ask questions. Do your research and collect all the information you can before you shake hands or give your John Hancock. Communication can be messy during this retrograde, so you cannot be afraid to ask questions to get the information you need.

4. Try not to be so sensitive.

It’s a crazy time for everyone, so try to see that other people’s way of thinking is clouded and their communication may be off. People may say more hurtful things, but everyone can have a bad day––or a bad three weeks!––so try not to take it personally. Give the person the benefit of the doubt.

5. If there are any unfinished projects you have, finish them.

The retrograde is a great time to complete and unfinished business you have been putting off.

6. That being said, this is now a great time to meet up with old friends and hang out and reminisce.

The retrograde is a good time to reconnect with the past.

7. Take some time to really enjoy being by yourself.

The Mercury retrograde will put you in unusual predicaments. Take this time to reflect on what you have done and what needs to be done. Furthermore, this is a great time to get to know you a little better. Allow this time period to show you where you need to go from your current situation. Re-examine yourself and your life and make any necessary moves.

Follow these survival tips and you may find yourself having an easier time with the Mercury retrograde. Before you know it, it will be over, until the last one of the year, that is (December 19th through December 31st).

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
