Summer 2008 was a simple time with incredible music. Let's get nostalgic and kick off summer 2018 with the best jams of our childhood.
1. "Shake It"- Metro Station
Miley Stewart and Smokin' Oken's real-life big bros were telling us to "shake, shake, shake, shake- a shake it" and we were loving their edge.
2. "I'm Yours"- Jason Mraz
3. "Low"- Flo Rida feat. T- Pain
We all felt like we were dancing in a club with "apple bottom jeans" and "boots with the fur" getting "low, low, low, low, low, low, low, low" even though we were 10 in our parents' basements
4. "I Kissed a Girl"- Katy Perry
Katy Perry burst onto the scene in 2008 with this absolute bop. She "kissed a girl and [she] liked it" and she's been a mega pop star ever since
5. "Disturbia"- Rihanna
Baby Ri Ri captivated us all and told us that her mind's in "disturbia" and got the tune "bum bum de ah. bum bum de dum da" stuck in our heads for the next 10 plus years.
6. "Should've Said No"- Taylor Swift
At this point, we were already two years into loving Taylor Swift and were way too young to know anything about heartbreak, yet we were still screaming in our rooms that he "should've said no, should've gone home, should've thought twice before [he] let it all go"
7. "Viva La Vida"- Coldplay
This song was the most fun history lesson that we ever learned. It taught us about the French Revolution and to be prepared for anything because "one minute I held the key, next the walls were closed on me"
8. "When I Grow Up"- The Pussycat Dolls
This song had us all singing "when I grow up, I wanna be famous, wanna be a start, wanna be in movies" and hey, don't we still?
9. "Bleeding Love"- Leona Lewis
Again, a sappy breakup song when we knew nothing about love. Yet, we would cry listening to it on iTunes singing "keep bleeding, keep, keep bleeding love"
10. "American Boy"- Estelle feat. Kanye West
This song made me think that "five foot seven guys" were super tall
11. "All Summer Long"- Kid Rock
This song reminds us all how sad it is when "the leaves begin to change, oh how we thought those days would never end"
12. "Burnin' Up"- The Jonas Brothers
The Jonas Brothers were everything good about 2008. This song gave us the best opening line burn (no pun intended of all time with the line, "I'm hot. You're cold. You go around like you know who I am, but you don't." It also provided us with the best rap of all time when they featured their bodyguard Big Rob who spit straight flames (again no pun intended.)
13. "Leavin'"- Jesse McCartney
Jesse McCartney was everyone's first crush once he came out with She's No You and Beautiful Soul. Once 2008 rolled around, he tried to shake his teenybopper persona with his next hit that was a bit more adult. He made us all want to tell our future boyfriends that we're "leavin', leavin', never coming back again" because we were going to be with Jesse McCartney.
14. "Pocketful of Sunshine"- Natasha Bedingfield
Every time it's sunny I still find myself singing, "I've got a pocket, got a pocketful fo sunshine."
15. "7 Things"- Miley Cyrus
Miley Cyrus taught us to never trust a boy when her song about Nick Jonas came out where she listed "the seven things I hate about you." I remember screaming the words with my friends about boys who we hadn't even met yet. Also, peep how she crossed out Nick Jonas' face in an actual picture of them. She's also been an icon.
16. "Love Song"- Sara Barellis
She sang the words "I'm not gonna write you a love song 'cause you asked for it 'cause you need one" to her record label and taught us all to stand up for yourself.
17. "This Is Me"- Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato
An absolute bop from the hit Disney Channel Original Movie, Camp Rock. Demi and Joe, a real-life couple, came together and sang a duet that was unapologetically about being yourself. Try listening to it and not screaming, "this is real! This is me! I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be!" You can't.
18. "Check Yes Juliet" (Run Baby Run)- WE the Kings
A pop-punk version of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet had us all shouting "check yes, Juliet, are you with me?"
These were a few of my favorite summer jams from 10 years ago that we need to bring back for summer 2018. Did I list all of your favorites?
