Go on a picnic

Pack your favorite lunch snacks and your closest friends and hit the rode to your local park and enjoy a relaxing picnic with friends.

Go camping in your backyard

The outdoors are so fun and getting close to nature while being super close to home is always fun and easy way to enjoy a summer night by pitching a tent in your backyard.

Make your own slip 'n slide

Tarp, water,stakes, plenty of dish soap and some of your best friends and you can have hours of fun with your diy slip 'n slide.

Take a road trip

Pack the car with your best friends and hit the open road! Make sure you have your best road trip playlist created before leaving!

Make your own ice cream

Beat the summer heat and make your own ice cream! It's a fun way to hangout with friends and enjoy a cool summer treat! This was a staple in my family during the summer in the south!

Host a cookout

Fire up the grill, call your friends and family and enjoy some fun in the sun and have a cookout. Add to the fun and host a water balloon fight or set up some yard games.

Make your own hammock

Hammocks are relaxing and perfect for a summer afternoon. They are also surprisingly easy to make.

Read a book in your new hammock

Now that you have your own hammock the next step is to enjoy it. Grab a new book and read to your heart's content

Go on a hike

Hikes are a great way to enjoy nature and your community should have countless trails available to explore.

Learn to fly a kite

Maybe you got one as a child or just watched others fly a kite. Why not attempt to fly one this summer? It is tricky, but worth the challenge!

Visit a state/national park

State and national parks are a great way to explore nature and learn new things. Enjoy a picnic, hike or bike ride at your local park, or you could volunteer and make your mark on helping restore natural habitats.

Go to the beach

A great way to enjoy the summer is at the beach enjoying the beautiful water and white sandy beaches. Do yourself a favor take a trip to the beach this summer. Go for a long walk on the beach.

Watch the sunrise or sunset

Sunrises and sunsets are some of the most beautiful times of the day. Find a great spot, maybe the beach, and enjoy watching the sun rise or set!

Go for a bike ride

Enjoy the summer breeze and enjoy a good workout at the same time and go for a bike ride this summer. State parks have some of the best trails for bike riding.

Go fishing

Pick up that rod and reel hiding in your closest and stop by and get some fresh worms before hitting the lake with some friends and enjoy a relaxing day of fishing this summer.

Volunteer

Take time to give back to your community this summer and volunteer. There are many great opportunities to volunteer whether at your local food bank, state park or even volunteering your time at your local church to help with vacation bible school it can be very self fulfilling to volunteer yourself in your community.

Watch summer fireworks

Go watch your local fireworks show. The Fourth of July is a great time for an evening of fun and fireworks.

Go stargazing

Head out to the country unless you already live out in the boondocks and find a spot to lay and watch the stars. It can be a great place to unwind from all the stresses of life and a great place to sit and talk with friends for hours.

Eat a slice of watermelon

Did you really even summer unless you had at least one slice of watermelon? Eat a slice, half, whole, I won't judge.

Dance in the rain

Last but not least, dance in the rain. Afternoon showers during the summer can be some of the most beautiful and peaceful showers. Take a moment, put yourself out there and dance in the rain. I promise it will have a lasting impact on you.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
