If you have a computer or live somewhere other than under a rock in the middle of the woods, you’ve heard about the recent movie, Suicide Squad. I’ve heard good, I’ve heard bad, and I’ve seen the movie myself. You might be wondering… Why was it bad? What parts of it were actually good? Well, might be wrong in others’ opinions, but I’ll share my thoughts on it.
1. Harley and Joker
The comic book accuracy of how Harley Quinn came to be was so spot on. They took just enough screen time to show Harleen’s gradual progression into madly in love (literally). I may not be an avid comic book reader, but I know the classic seduction tale. Margot Robbie also did a phenomenal job portraying Harley and her obsession with Joker. Unfortunately, they barely, if not never, touched on the fact that Joker and Harley’s relationship is abusive. The closest they got to it is when Joker is about to, essentially, torture Harleen and says “Oh, I’m not going to kill you. I’m just going to hurt you. Really… Really… Bad.” Although this is terrible as is, the abuse goes much deeper that is not seen in Suicide Squad.
2. Harley
Let me start by saying that Margot Robbie did an absolutely phenomenal performance. With her acting in general, she gets really into the character. So into it that she trained to be able to do most of her own stunts! If you haven’t seen the movie, there was a fight scene in an elevator where she was being grabbed from behind, but jumped up, ran on the ceilingof the elevator, and smashed one of the weird, rock-demon things. Talk about a badass. Harley was one of those characters that could make a bad movie watchable.
3. Joker
Not a huge fan. As someone who latched onto Heath Ledger’s joker, Jared Leto was definitely a downgrade. Although in some scenes he was pretty good, like in the one mentioned above with Harley, I just got way too much of a pimp vibe from him. I understand that Harley is “his” and the abusive relationship and whatnot, but why did he have a grill? Why was Harley stripping? Things were happening that didn’t need to happen.
4. Deadshot and El Diablo
These were my two favorite characters in the Suicide Squad, with Harley being a third. In Deadshot, you saw him struggle with being a dad and a murderer, while also facing the choice of destroying his name or sparing Harley’s life. As with El Diablo, he swore to a life of peace after accidentally killing his family. As the movie progresses, you see everyone get more and more irritated with him for not helping with the fights. But Deadshot helps him find his balance between violence and using it to do good.
5. Plot
Overall, the plot really made no sense at all. It jumped here and there and you had no idea where it was going until the last twenty minutes or so. Most of the movie, I had never even seen advertised including the Enchantress and conflicts centered around her.
Overall, I hope Margot Robbie, Deadshot, and El Diablo are all in a sequel because they were the best parts (the only good parts really). So, if you love a good Harley, go see it. Otherwise I’d stick to the comics. #Itcouldvebeenbetter
