White Feminism doesn't apply simply to feminists who are white but is instead used to describe a feminist who ignores the intersectional values of the feminist movement. These feminists are focused on valid social issues, such as closing the gendered wage gap but ignore aspects of racism, homophobia, ableism, transphobia, et cetera, that negatively affect so many of their peers.
Though white women do face challenges they must conquer that their male peers don't, ignorance towards other forms of oppression divides and weakens the feminist movement.
1. Remember your privilege
Being white isn't a sin. The sin lies in thinking that white privilege doesn't encompass white woman. For white women, when discussing and defending feminism, remember that there are challenges that you do not face that you still need to discuss.
Erasing the importance of those who aren't straight, cis-gendered, able-bodied, white women are easier to do than women like that would think.
2. Don't support famous white feminists
Lena Dunham, Amy Schumer, Taylor Swift, and so many other feminists in the media are simply promoting white feminism for their own personal brand. Being a feminist is trendy right now, which is not inherently a bad thing. However, supporting a movement with words but no action doesn't make you "woke."
Basically, if a famous white feminist wouldn't be discussing issues if President Trump hadn't gotten elected, then they aren't who you should be supporting. Women like Zendaya, Laverne Cox, Carrie Fisher, and maybe others do amazing advocating for feminists with genuine, inclusive motivations behind them.
3. Bring up intersectionality in conversations
Doing this might make you the unpopular person at the dinner table, but bringing up topics of intersectional oppression is important. Reminding yourself and those around you that there is more than one side of feminism is crucial for not letting white feminism grow.
Call out your friends, family, and loved ones about on their white feminism when you see it and try your hardest to educate them.
4. Focus on unity, rather than division
One of the biggest reason white feminism is taking away the validity of the feminist movement from an outsiders point of view is how divided the movement seems. Though there are a lot of things feminism fights for, which is no way a bad thing. However, when there are divisions, contradictions, and hypocritical tendencies within the movement, it weakens.
Fight for unity among all people because, at the end of the day, feminism is about the right of equality.
5. Defend and amplify silenced voices
So many voices do not have the power that a white, cis-gendered, straight, able-bodied, relatively wealthy woman's voice has. If you fit in that category or any category of privilege, no matter how much or little you have, use it.
Use your privilege to raise awareness for those who can't. Don't pity yourself for having privilege over others, use it in a positive manner to fight for equality.
6. If you don't know what to think, shut up and listen
It's hard to imagine what someone has gone through without experiencing it yourself, that is a very human thing to do. However, do not think that making assumptions is fine. If you are a white woman, talking about issues of race and a person of color tells that you are wrong, don't argue and state that you are color blind or you face the same time type of oppression as they do.
Listen, learn, and grow as a feminist.
