Springtime in Indiana is hard to clarify as just one season. In fact, it's basically a little bit of every season in a mixing bowl. Every day the weather is different, sometimes even every hour. We people of Indiana just simply have to be prepared for anything. Here are a few common thoughts that correspond to Indiana during the "Spring".
Although the first day of Spring is March 20th (roughly), Indiana usually doesn't get that memo until about May.
It stays bitterly cold for far too long. It may seem like warm weather is near, and then BAM, snowstorm. Don't get your warm weather hopes up at any point, because more times than not, they will be crushed.
We go from snowstorms straight to tornadoes without warning.
I think we get more weather advisories than any other state. Yet, they almost never correlate. It's downpours one day, snow the next, and then tornadoes. The weather changes faster than I get the chance to change outfits.
The plants are just as confused as we are.
They never know if it's actually safe to make an entrance because they could be blown away or frozen in just an instant.
Layers are the only option.
You best wear a t shirt, jacket, and coat when starting off the day. It may be freezing temps in the morning and 70 in the evening. It has even been the other way around. Also, never leave without an umbrella. It could be a clear sky and still pour rain any second.
Potholes everywhere. Everywhere.
Indiana is known for having horrible streets full of potholes and cracks. Blame this on our moody weather. The salt from the snow mixed with crazy winds and topped off with horrible flooding tears our roads up. The roads are about as beat up as we are having to deal with this weather.
Deciding whether you need hot coffee or iced coffee is the hardest part of everyday.
Do I need hot coffee to keep me warm? Or do I need cold coffee to keep me cool? The world may never know. Might as well get both.
Allergies never end.
The crazy weather mixed with rising humidity and pollen counts is an equation that always ends with runny noses, teary eyes, and sinus headaches. At least pharmacies get plenty of business.
Despite all the crazy, it is still beautiful.
We Indiana-ins (GO PURDUE!) may complain constantly, but we still are very lucky. We can get fresh white snow, blooming flowers, and a beautiful sunset all in one day. There's always a beautiful sight to see here in good ole Indiana. We may never admit it, but we do enjoy this fickle state.
