Five Sounds Associated with Summer

Yeah... it is a series now I guess.

Much like the last time I wrote a piece on this, it was about the unique sounds you hear every spring and how they become part of the daily soundtrack of your life as you go through the spring months. Well this time around is for the summer... and things are reduced to their cores as the unrelenting force that heats this planet, allows life to flourish, and makes us slightly uncomfortable, continues to beat down on us for what can only be described as "dog days". While it has been a rainy and odd summer here in Connecticut, these are some of the sounds I'm sure you've heard plenty of this past summer...

Complaining about how hot it is

There always seems to be some special comradery when it comes to complaining about how hot it is. Everyone is sweating and having something, whether it's their makeup, clothes, or sanity, everything becomes worse as it bakes in the Sun. The heat is a thick blanket that leaves an obvious impact on everyone it touches, so I guess it's only right that we do the very human thing of banding together and having a good ol' complain about how d**n hot it is.

The suction sound of your skin sticking to everything

Now this may be considered a little graphic, but there is nothing pretty about being covered in water your own body excretes and that forms a nice seal between it and whatever your skin has to be touching. It is never a good look and only serves as a cruel reminder that you're not getting out of this heat or away from this sweat any time soon.

Chugging water

Hydration. It's an important part of staying cool and keeping your body going during the hot summer months, and there's nothing like a good chug to speed up the whole process or get a quick refill. It may be good for the person drinking it, but the loud glugging sound the naturally comes from it isn't the most pleasant thing to hear when you're trying to concentrate on something like driving.

Fans flapping

Anyone who has ever been to a baseball game or the beach during the summer has definitely heard the sounds of all those tiny little fans spinning in the wind trying their best to cool the occupant down, unsuccessfully mainly. They're either battery-operated and basically worthless or paper fans that may make you feel a bit more stylish but are still about as good as waving a handkerchief in the humidity.

The sounds of trying to get the A/C to work

Whether you're trying to get the old gal running again for the summer or installing a unit that fits in your window, there's probably plenty of frustration and cussing to come from getting the A/C to actually work. Knowing that you're so close to actually getting cool while getting hotter in the process from the blood rushing to your head is sometimes a sight to behold, but not great to hear as the whole scene can quickly turn into the summer version of A Christmas Story.

If You Have A Project You Want To Grow, Crowdfunding May Be The Answer

The benefits of the crowdfunding phenomenon.

The idea of crowdfunding is exciting, isn't it? A small town poet can use a platform like GoFundMe or Patreon to sell their work directly to those who are looking for it. A community organizer can not only raise funds for an upcoming event, but they can also keep the funds coming in to raise money for the monthly expenses of running their group. A magazine editor can keep their readership engaged through multimedia as well as tangible perks in exchange for tiers of subscription costs.

Crowdfunding makes it so people can combine multiple engagement styles directly with target audiences for a common cause.

What really makes crowdfunding satisfying is getting monetary confirmation that what one is passionate about is supported. Money rules a lot of the world, and receiving money for creating or providing something for others is extremely fulfilling. Different than just going to work and earning a paycheck. Jobs employ workers to create or provide something that has already had a template of origination.

Crowdfunding is running one's own business of creation or providing goods without a bunch of the red tape. In fact, one could say that crowdfunding has allowed sites like Etsy to flourish. One can now make a pretty decent profit just making pins, Mickey ears, necklaces — whatever one can imagine — and get it directly in eyes of those interested. There's nothing to lose in crowdfunding, just the hour or so it may or may not take to set up the site.

Crowdfunding can also be used for temporary things like school funds, funeral funds, and recovery efforts. Need $10,000 to get through a semester at college? Have a sudden death in the family and need $5,000 to pay closing costs and unexpected expenses? Major world disaster like a hurricane or tsunami destroy an entire majorly populated area? GoFundMe is your answer. You'll most likely get twice as much funds then the goal you set.

There's now many crowdfunding sites out there. Outside of GoFundMe, the three biggies are Patreon, Indiegogo, and Kickstarter. So take your pick, make your page, and get some money!

And just in case you're wondering, yes I do have crowdfunding efforts out there for my projects! One for my personal writings, and one for my magazine.

Dreams

"Hold fast to dreams

For if dreams die

Life is a broken-winged bird

That cannot fly.

Hold fast to dreams

For when dreams go

Life is a barren field

Frozen with snow"

By: Langston Hughes

Dreams are what keep me going everyday. The dream of my life. The dream to live where I want. The dream to do what I want. The dream to conquer the world. The dream to succeed. The dream to be happy in my own life.
