Five Sounds Associated with Summer

Five Sounds Associated with Summer

Yeah... it is a series now I guess.

Much like the last time I wrote a piece on this, it was about the unique sounds you hear every spring and how they become part of the daily soundtrack of your life as you go through the spring months. Well this time around is for the summer... and things are reduced to their cores as the unrelenting force that heats this planet, allows life to flourish, and makes us slightly uncomfortable, continues to beat down on us for what can only be described as "dog days". While it has been a rainy and odd summer here in Connecticut, these are some of the sounds I'm sure you've heard plenty of this past summer...

Complaining about how hot it is

There always seems to be some special comradery when it comes to complaining about how hot it is. Everyone is sweating and having something, whether it's their makeup, clothes, or sanity, everything becomes worse as it bakes in the Sun. The heat is a thick blanket that leaves an obvious impact on everyone it touches, so I guess it's only right that we do the very human thing of banding together and having a good ol' complain about how d**n hot it is.

The suction sound of your skin sticking to everything

Now this may be considered a little graphic, but there is nothing pretty about being covered in water your own body excretes and that forms a nice seal between it and whatever your skin has to be touching. It is never a good look and only serves as a cruel reminder that you're not getting out of this heat or away from this sweat any time soon.

Chugging water

Hydration. It's an important part of staying cool and keeping your body going during the hot summer months, and there's nothing like a good chug to speed up the whole process or get a quick refill. It may be good for the person drinking it, but the loud glugging sound the naturally comes from it isn't the most pleasant thing to hear when you're trying to concentrate on something like driving.

Fans flapping

Anyone who has ever been to a baseball game or the beach during the summer has definitely heard the sounds of all those tiny little fans spinning in the wind trying their best to cool the occupant down, unsuccessfully mainly. They're either battery-operated and basically worthless or paper fans that may make you feel a bit more stylish but are still about as good as waving a handkerchief in the humidity.

The sounds of trying to get the A/C to work

Whether you're trying to get the old gal running again for the summer or installing a unit that fits in your window, there's probably plenty of frustration and cussing to come from getting the A/C to actually work. Knowing that you're so close to actually getting cool while getting hotter in the process from the blood rushing to your head is sometimes a sight to behold, but not great to hear as the whole scene can quickly turn into the summer version of A Christmas Story.

An Open Letter To My College Freshman Roommate

Dear College Freshmen Roommate,

To be honest, my first impression of you was a quiet, shy private catholic school girl. (Wow, this couldn't have been the farthest thing from the truth)! I remember walking behind you and your boyfriend on the way to the bars on our very first night of Summer B. I kept thinking how much you didn't like me because you didn't say hi to me. Little did I know, after admitting to each other our unfortunate first impressions of each other years later, you were just being cognizant of me because you thought I was a real-life version of Regina George from Mean Girls. It turns out you weren't the shy, private school girl I thought you were and I definitely wasn't as cool as Regina George after all.

It didn't take much time for us to become best friends. You had me at "So, do you know what a mountain melt is from Ale House?" After this day, I knew we were going to be lifelong friends and celebrate our passion for carbs, fast food, and sugar together. You make friendship seem so easy. You're always down to study whenever, leave the library whenever, and most importantly, get Chick-Fil-A no matter what our budget is or how broke we are. You always pick up the phone and support all the bad decisions I make. You ALWAYS figure out all my Wordscape puzzles for me and support my real life Candy Crush addiction.

I realize that you give me a slice of home when my mom doesn't answer the phone. I love that we always get to talk about our high school memories together because every story is a new and exciting one for both of us. Sometimes I'm happy we met in college because we would have caused way too much trouble in high school together. Besides, I get to hear about how much of an awesome volleyball player you were and I tell you about crazy my lacrosse years. Although, I will say how much it sucks when we go home for summer and winter break because I do get major separation anxiety!

When we go out, you know we're requesting ALL Luke Combs songs and sing until our voices are gone. Whether it be going out to the club, binge-eating, studying at the library, watching the Bachelor in your apartment, going to football tailgates or watching baseball games together, we are ALWAYS laughing. You have this amazing brightness and you only radiate positivity and happiness. I can't wait to see what the rest of college has in store for us. I feel so grateful that I got the chance to meet you and call you one of my true, lifelong best friends. I love you to Infinity (the place where it all began) and Back!

ROOM 416 INFINITY HALL ALWAYS!

Forever and Always,

your college freshmen roommate

A New Years Resolution Must PART 2

**If you haven't read, A New Years Resolution Must, I wouldd take a peek at that real quick before you get too into this because it will make MUCH more sense :)

Quick thought before I get to the main point of my article:

I really really enjoyed the 25 Days of Kindness Cards and I definitely want to do something similar again in some way shape or form. I have not decided yet but in scrolling through some of the older articles I've written, I remembered what I wrote this past year for Lent. In 10 Things To Give Up For Lent Other Than That Favorite Candy Bar, I talked about writing letters to different people. My original plan was to write 40 letters, one for each day of Lent. It failed miserably. 40 is a lot! But I definitely think approaching that in the same way I wrote the 25 Days of Kindness Cards will be a better way to spend some time in reflection, not just during Lent, but during any point of the year. You don't just have to write a letter. You can just send the little quotes of kindness. Leave them in random people's mailboxes or slip them under a door or leave them on a bus seat or a park bench. You never know who'll need it.

NOT THAT LENT IS ANYTIME SOON... I don't want to rush the seasons. Just a thought or two to get you thinking if you were considering taking on something like this. Or maybe to get you thinking :)

Okay, now to the real point:

In keeping with the theme of my last article-spreading little bits of kindness all over-I wanted to share with everyone the 18 different kindness quotes that I put in each of the 25 Days of Kindness Cards. Like I said in the little blerb before, you don't even have to write a letter. Print these out and spread them out in your dorm building, across campus, or any other place you can think of. Save them and text a different one to a different person each day. Maybe these will be the few that get you going on your small acts of kindness journey!
