Imagine: its a rainy, Sunday morning, you have a warm cup of tea in your hand as you look introspectively out your bedroom window longingly at the rain. What is the one thing that pairs well with a rainy Sunday morning? The answer is a sad playlist, ready to make the hardest heart crack in two. This list is all you need complete this mood.
DISCLAIMER: This list is in no particular order, as all of these songs are deeply sad in their own way.
14. "Same Old Lang Syne"- Dan Fogelberg
This song has one of the most descriptive stories of any song that I know. It is about lost love and possibly the regret of a lost love. Old lovers bump into each other in a grocery store. They drink beer in their cars and they both go on their way, wondering if either one was or should have been "the one" for them. The song has a beautiful piano playing in the back with Fogelberg's stunning voice showing off his range in the choruses.
13. "Space Oddity"- David Bowie
This classic song by Bowie can be interpreted in multiple ways. This song was written after Bowie saw the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey". Some people believe that this song is about leaving the earth, or essentially, dying. This song has many different chord progressions and interpretations that so many people can find solace and meaning in it, which is what makes this song so utterly beautiful and sad.
12. "Hurricane"- Bob Dylan
From a quick listen, this song doesn't appear to be sad. Once you dive deeper into the lyrics, it is easy to see why it has made this list. The song is about an African American Boxer who was framed for murder because he was black. The sadness comes from the fact that this is based on a true story, and it happened within our country. This song shines light on the racist past, and is a beautifully told story; no one can tell a story like Bob Dylan.
11. "Off He Goes" - Pearl Jam
"Off He Goes" is one of "Pearl Jams" least popular songs. They are usually know for their hits such as "Even Flow". This song goes in a completely different direction. It can be interpreted many different ways, but basically, it's about a man who comes and goes. Some think this refers to a friend who uses you and leaves you. Some think the lead singer Eddie wrote this about himself. Whichever theory you subscribe to, it is hard to deny the sad nature of this song. The beautiful acoustic sound brings out a mellow vibe, and Eddie's haunting voice can strike someone with uncontrollable emotion. This song is beautiful and simple; it's the perfect sad song.
10. "Hurt" - Johnny Cash
"Hurt" is actually a cover originally performed by the 90's grunge band "Nine Inch Nails". This version of the song is so incredibly sad because Cash sang it while he was close to death. You can hear the desperation in his voice, and you can tell that he connects with every lyric. This song looks back on a lifetime of regret. The somber line, "Everyone I know/ goes away in the end", can make anyone feel fearful of the end of life.
9. "Vera"- Pink Floyd
This one minute and thirty two second song has enough sadness to last a lifetime. This song is a quick song about a woman, Vera Lynn, who is missing, and the narrator of the song asks, "what has become of you?" The song is so short, but that doesn't take away from the sadness depicted. They are also versatile lyrics that can be interpreted in a multitude of ways. The way Roger Waters sings this song can tug at anyone. His unyielding desperation and sadness is apparent when he calls out for Vera. The use of violins and other such instruments really brings forth the sadness of the song.
8. "Pothole"- Modern Baseball
Many people do not expect pop punk bands to have feelings, but from my experience, they are some of the most emotional artists. This song goes to prove my point. This acoustic song sounds cheaply recorded because you can hear the guitarist's hands slide ever so softly over his strings, which gives off an authentic feel. His voice is haunting and he sounds choked up while singing. If the line, "I can be everything you need, if you make me/ I can be every crack in your concrete, if you let me off easy" doesn't make you cry, I don't know what will. This song is full of teenage angst and their interpretation of love.
7. "Luka"- Suzanne Vega
This song is probably one of the saddest stories of all time. It is about child abuse, which is one of the reasons it is awfully sad. Suzanne Vega sings as if she was the child and it is a haunting reminder of all of the hate and awful things in the world. The lyrics invoke the deepest and saddest emotions of all time when she sings, "they only hit until you cry, after that you don't ask why". This song is haunting because child abuse does happen and it's something that many children experience. This is the most important songs on the list.
6. "Something in the way (Live at Unplugged)"- Nirvana
This song on the album is sad, but there is something about the way that Kurt Cobain sings this song that is eerie. This song is about a time in Kurt's life where he lived under a bridge because he was homeless. It's sad because he actually lived and went through this experience, so he sings about it with the saddest emotions. The way he shouts, "something in the way" and hums immediately after is disturbingly eerie.
5. "Asleep"- The Smiths
This song is beautifully crafted with soft piano. The song is led by Morrissey's stunningly painful voice. Every word he sings make it seem like he isn't sad but the lyrics would seem to prove otherwise. One interpretation of this song tends to revolve around suicide. Obviously this is a heavy topic, which got this song on this list. The lyrics, "There is another world/ There is a better world/ Well, there must be" are some of the most simple, yet somber lyrics.
4. "Lightning Crashes" - Live
This song is about the death of a life, and the birth of another. The dichotomy of the themes is what makes this song so sad. This song starts off with a very slow electric guitar that later picks up in full swing with the band. The imagery in the lyrics add to the mood. The lyrics, "Lightning crashes an old mother dies/ Her intentions fall to the floor/ the angel closes her eyes/ the confusion that was hers/ belongs now to the baby down the hall" depict life coming in and out of this world. The lead singer sings with hopelessness, but it also sounds like he is reaching out through his tonality.
3. "Bella Donna"- Stevie Nicks
This song is about becoming fearless. It appears to be a letter written to herself about life and about strength. This song has very simple piano chords that add to the sadness, while Stevie Nick's eerie voice reigns supreme over. "No speed limit, this is the fast lane"; this lyric can depict how Stevie was talking to herself. The song is soft, and sweet, and classy.
2. "Society"- Eddie Vedder
The lead singer of "Pearl Jam", Eddie Vedder ventured off on a solo career where he made this beautiful masterpiece. This song was featured in the movie "Into The Wild". This song is about leaving civilization or society. It's also about the craziness of society and how the narrator needs to go on this mission to find himself in the vast world. The guitar is sad yet hopeful. I saw this played live in 2016 and it was one of the most emotionally visceral experiences I have ever had in my life, especially when he said, "there's those thinking more or less less is more/but if less is more how you're keeping score".
1. "Fake Plastic Trees"- Radiohead
This song is honestly one of the most emotional songs of all time. "Radiohead" has its way of singing very average lyrics, but the way they sing them is what makes them sad. This song is about living in a fake world or a plastic world. The narrator seems to have all of these emotions, but he is left alone and no one else understands him; this is something that everyone has felt. The line, "it wears him out", which is sung near the middle of the song is sang with so much pain and hopelessness that I am brought to tears listening to it every single time.
