Society Defines Who We Are And That's Not OK

Society Defines Who We Are And That's Not OK

Everyone on this Earth can attest to the fact that we make decisions based on what the rest of society thinks. Right? If a female is wearing an inch too short of a skirt, she is suddenly a hoe, right? If a male walks around with a long, bushy beard, he is automatically scraggly and not clean, right? If a gay male/female wears something that doesn't compliment their role in the relationship, that's a problem right? If a bigger person is out and about, they are automatically seen as a slob and lazy right?

Well, that's how our prized society sees it. If a person does something that goes against what the rest of society thinks, they are wrong and chastised. I asked a few people that have something about them that is "wrong" with them according to the rest of the society we live in.

"Society is all about appearances and expectations. When society "fat shames" plus size women, it does hurt."

"We're told what to do and what not to do more than we are accepted as we are and are able to just be ourselves."

"Since I'm gay, I feel like I have to put extra effort into trying to be girly. When I don't, I feel like people judge and assume I'm not looking the girliest just because I'm gay."

"Today's society promotes the idea of an ideal woman as skinny, tall, and tan which I'm not and never will be."

"If we act or dress a certain way, society perceives it as we're asking for it."

"But I do know that society is very quick to stereotype anything that I do. If I strive to work hard and not let the fact that I'm a woman stand in my way, then I'm automatically a "feminist." To society, I'm whatever they need for me to be at that time to prove a point."

"When I go out, I have to wear more "girly" clothes, especially because my hair is short like a guy's. It's just easier to conform and not have to deal with it."

"I believe that most of my anxiety or avoidance of most social situations is derived from how I perceive society's view of me."

There is always a problem with something and society is never happy unless they can make someone miserable about themselves.

If a bigger person wanted to be called lazy and a slob then they would ask. No need for it to come out of the mouths of others. I know plenty of bigger people and they are definitely not lazy nor a slob. I know gay people who are girly but just decide that they want to not wear makeup one day and who cares? If they want to not look girly one day then whatever right? If a male has a long beard then who cares? It doesn't make him scraggly or nasty. He's just a man with a beard. If a female wears a skirt or a pair of shorts that are a little shorter than usual who cares? Are her butt cheeks hanging out? No. So zip it. If a male wants to wear his shirt off and has a little chub, who cares? That's his prerogative.

Society does NOT define who we are.

We define who we are.

Our inner thoughts and feelings define who we are.

Our actions define who we are.

Society's opinion doesn't define who we are. If what you are doing is not hurting anyone or yourself then do what you want to do. Just because you go against what everyone else thinks, doesn't mean that you are a bad person. It just means that you aren't going to listen to what other people think.

You define you. No one else does.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
