While walking around the Monet gardens the other day, I passed--as usual--my fair share of well-dressed women. It's been a constant adventure for my eyes to roam European streets and scan the crowd for looks to inevitably recreate. There are always a few choice outfits that stand out in my memory of each and every day. This particular day, one of these outstanding looks was a woman wearing the oh-so-French trend of pristine white sneakers, a white button down blouse, and a camel-colored coat draped over her shoulders.
But, what impressed me most about her impressionism-trip ensemble was the pattern of her pants--a multi-colored, vertical stripe of white, brown, and orange. I was wowed from the get-go. And then, after a moment of perhaps too-blatant observation, I realized something else. Loose-fitting, linen, and lightweight: her pants seemed likely to be pajama pants. I was at once amazed and shocked. Ever since I first begged (and failed to convince) my mom to let me wear what I thought to be a very chic-looking Vera Wang nightgown as a dress to class in middle school, I've been interested in the sleepwear-as-ready-to-wear fashion idea. But, so rarely have I had the chance to see it in action.
For Valentine's Day, Vogue released a video and photoshoot of Bella Hadid, shot by Petra Collins. In both, Hadid styles the "9 Best Looks for Valentine's Day": a collection of pajama-based outfits that combined sex-appeal with full-on comfort. These looks fall completely in line with the growing, mostly undefined trend, of sleepwear brought out of the house. I like to call it sleepy style. Wafer tanks, cotton baby tees, slips, and loose-knit sweaters--add jeans, a jacket, or even a mini-skirt to these pieces and they become an outfit for running errands, going to class, or grabbing lunch with friends.
Casual cool has been the name-of-the-game in recent trends. The grungier looks of the late 80s and 90s brought a wave of low-key nonchalance to fashion that has only escalated as we sought the look of effortlessness more and more over time.
Athleisure may be the most successful trend to come out of 2015, and it's still going strong in 2016. Workout wear turned streetwear has inspired many to rush out and find their perfect pair of Adidas or Nikes, and to spend their LBD money on just the right pair of Lululemon leggings. But, are it's roots really based in athleticism? When we all started wearing our yoga pants daily back in high school, was it really to rush off to the gym after class, or were we trying to bring that comfy-in-bed feel with us when we walked out the door? When I banned sweatpants from my wardrobe in the tenth grade, little did I know that just a few years later I'd be combing the racks for just the right pair, or how glad college-me would be sporting casually cute looks that I could fall right asleep in when crawling back from each late-night library session.
But, there are more extreme ways to bring sleepy style to life than just rolling up to class in the sweats you slept in last night--and the fashion world is inspiring fashion risk-takers to bring certain pieces out of the bedroom.
Since the 90's, the slip dress has been a waxing and waning staple of fashion. It seems every year a magazine declares the item to be back, and advises us all to start plucking pieces from lingerie stores to wear for the full duration of our next date night. Part of this look's appeal is its versatility. Wear a nightie with flats or sandals, a loose-knit cardigan or a denim jacket, and your favorite carryall and you're set to run your daytime errands. But, pair a silk camisole with your going-out jeans or sport your negligee with a menswear inspired coat and you've got an ensemble for a night on the town. Lace detailing and slinky fabrics give this take on night-to-day a romantic feel, giving sleepy-style that upscale touch.
Perhaps most extreme, celebrities have taken to wearing full-blown pajama sets as outfits for anything from heading to the airport to dinners on the town to Hollywood events. Photos of celebrities stepping out in less than polished ensembles have been popular in gossip rags for some time now, so it's refreshing to see some celebs embracing their right to be comfy and cozy, while not losing the sense of style that keeps fashion blogs and magazines running.
Stripes, polka dots, and florals are unwaveringly popular prints, so the pajama set look is not a hard one to integrate into your own wardrobe. You can go full-glam à la Rihanna, showing off the sleepwear in it's full glory, pairing it with pieces like bandeaus and bralettes and slipper inspired shoes. Or, take a more chill, menswear inspired look, like Kendall Jenner, wearing the set more like a suit.
Either way, pulling the PJs out for daytime may be the best way to keep the comforts of bed with you all day, while still looking fresh and put-together. Casual wear seems here to stay, so this trend is right on time. Perhaps we should all take this time to relish in the everyday-is-pajama-day dreams of our youth, before the trend tide turns and we're all expected to dress up like grown ups again. Ew.
