In anticipation for winter break, here are a few must-do things to complete over the next month.

1. Drive around and look at Christmas lights.

What better way to get into the holiday spirit than looking at festive houses?

2. Bake holiday treats.

Not only is it a delicious activity, but it can be a great activity to do with friends or family, which leads me to ...

3. Spend time with family and friends.

It's probably rare that everyone's schedules coordinate, so enjoy it when they do.

4. Spend time with your pets.

They miss you just as much as you miss them.

5. Take a much-needed mental break from all of your school work.

Decompressing from the end-of-semester stress is not only a want, but also a need.

6. Make the most out of the few weeks you have home.

Before you know it, winter break will be over.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
