As college students, we all have one goal in common, to be successful after graduation. Most students make the assumption that there is no guarantee that they will be able to land a job after graduation. However, there are ways that students can make sure that they are on the right track. The solution is actually quite simple. Students have to wake up everyday and make the conscious decision to be successful. Here are seven simple ways you can ensure you are on the right path.
1. Dress the part.
While it is extremely tempting to throw on sweatpants to go to class, you are much more likely to feel better about yourself and what work you are trying to accomplish if you dress professionally. Even just putting on jeans and a nice shirt, you are more likely to be dedicated and focused. After all, don't your sweatpants just make you want to crawl back into bed? Plus you never know who you are going to run into throughout the day. For all you know, your future boss might be touring your college and might be impressed with you simply because of how nicely you presented yourself.
2. Set SMART goals for yourself.
One of the best ways you can ensure yourself that you are going to succeed is if you write down what it is you are looking to achieve. However, it is not realistic to set a goal such as I want to be a billionaire by the time I am 25. Instead, write down a goal that is specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and timely, hence the acronym S.M.A.R.T. An example of a smart goal would be "Apply to three different internships that I am interested in by the end of April."
3. Make a schedule for yourself.
The best way to ensure that you are achieving the goals that you set yourself is setting a schedule. By setting up a schedule for yourself, you ensure that you have enough time to do homework, sleep, workout and work on longer term projects. Also remember to allow yourself to have free time to relax!
4. Be kind to everyone you encounter -- you never know where they might show up in the future.
When you are in college, you have the opportunity to be able to meet hundreds of people. Make sure you leave a positive impression of yourself on professors, fellow students and other faculty members on the campus, After all, you never know who you are going to need to write you a recommendation, work with on a project or who might be a potential employer/fellow employee.
5. Be positive.
A study conducted by researchers in Dartmouth and University of Michigan and detailed in Forbes magazine revealed that pessimists' health deteriorated far more rapidly as they aged. When you think positive, you are far more likely to work harder and produce better work than if you have a negative viewpoint. By believing you can be successful, you can achieve more than you might have thought you could.
6. Surround yourself with people who push you closer to your goals.
Nothing is worse than surrounding yourself with people who bring you down. In order to be successful, you need people who are going to push you past your limits and have you exceed your goals. You are going to hit bumps in the road along the way and you will need people to help you through the hard times.
Winston Churchill once said, "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts." Remember that it is a long road, but you have the ability to travel it and be successful.
