Utada Hikaru’s 'Simple and Clean' Deserves A Listen After You Graduate From College

Even though Utada Hikaru's "Simple and Clean" is the official theme song of the "Kingdom Hearts" franchise, this song sums up the feeling of uncertainty and sentimentality, especially after college graduation.

What future lies ahead of me after college graduation? The future is still a mystery. Looking back, I have gone a long way to make it this far. But what is waiting for me? That I do not know. But if there is one song that describes that feeling, that will be Utada Hikaru's "Simple and Clean."

Even though Utada Hikaru's "Simple and Clean" is the official theme song of the "Kingdom Hearts" franchise, this song sums up the feeling of uncertainty and sentimentality, especially after college graduation. As an adult, I have tasted bitterness and sweetness of life and I have even grown to embrace the happy things and sad things of life as well. You can't help but look at how far you have come. And sometime I can't even imagine how much time has passed and, in the end, there is a feeling of wholeness to your being. Perhaps, that is what Utada Hikaru means by "Simple and Clean."

One set of lyrics in the song that resonates with me is when Utada Hikaru sings out the lyrics:

"The daily things
(like this and that and what, what)
That keep us all busy
Are confusing me"

When listening to this part of this song, I have learned that as we all grow up, we soon understand that friends, even the closest ones, go their separate way. They're doing their own thing as life goes on. At the same time, life changes for everyone. This is the point where everything does not make sense and suddenly, you are becoming even more aware of what is going on around you. I believe this stage of life isn't what we consider to be a loss of innocence, but rather the way into adulthood.

Then the song hits me when Utada Hikaru sings:

"Hold me
Whatever lies beyond this morning
Is a little later on
Regardless of warnings, the future doesn't scare me at all
Nothing's like before"

After college, everything is not like before. I feel like a completely new person, especially who has accomplished something and is ready to set out towards a new tomorrow. It's scary thinking about the future, but if you have made it this far, then what is there to be scared of? Throughout college, you have proven yourself that you can accomplish anything and nothing can stop you from reaching that important goal of yours, called the future.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
