Working on a small organic farm is a very niche part of society. Not only is this done by only a few people, but the market for your product is small as well. This type of farming comes with a very unique set of issues and skills that some farmers might not have as well as very conventional farming issues, like waking up and feeding the chickens. Here are 12 signs you are an organic farmer:
1. Feeling hungover after eating non-organic food
Denny’s “all you can eat pancakes” sounded so good at the time, but puking in the parking lot because you haven’t eaten that much processed sugar or gluten in a long time is the worst feeling. Why has delicious shitty food forsaken me this way?
2. Weeding the beets
You probably have been weeding the beets for five hours, but still have half a bed left.
3. Colorado Potato Beetles making you feel like Patrick Bateman
These mothercluckers. Spending a good hour in the potatoes squishing these neon orange pests will make anyone feel like a merciless deity.
4. Trying to cook for the crew is ridiculous
There is always one person on the crew that is gluten-dairy-refined sugar- free vegan.
5. The Co-Op being your Mecca
A regular pilgrimage is made to the Co-Op to stock up on Dr. Bronner’s, Turmeric, and organic breakfast burritos
6. Being frustrated when people only want to buy lettuce and kale
Becky, there are more greens than just those two.
7. Everyone complimenting how beautiful your produce is, but not buying it
I know how gorgeous my chard is, what I don't know is why you gotta play me like this
8. “This looks different than the peas I buy at the store”
Well, that is because all of your GMO, pre-packaged, frozen peas look the same. My peas are sexy as hell.
9. Sometimes wishing you could use Roundup
If you weren’t so morally opposed, it would save you so much time and effort
10. The CSA tango
Being able to supply loyal customers with fresh, wonderful produce is great, but when that means you have to wake up before the sun to do it, kind of sucks.
11. "Do you have tomatoes yet?"
Does it look like I have tomatoes yet?
12. Feeling proud after a tough week
Maybe the weeds or pests were killer, but you got this week done and without help from GMOs or crazy chemicals. You have produced something you can feel good about giving it to families to enjoy.
