Whether you love it or hate it, if you grew up in a small town, you have experienced these 24 things.

1. You knew everyone's first, middle, and last name, and probably even their parent's and siblings' names

2. The dating scene was so small that you and your friends sometimes dated the same people

3. Your town had one, maybe two, stop lights

4. No matter where you lived in town, you could get to the school in under ten minutes

5. You had the same group of friends since kindergarten

6. Your principle knew you by your first name

7. Breakups were hard because you were in biology, gym, and art club together

8. You had teachers that remembered your parents or your siblings

9. If a sports team was having a good season, they were treated like royalty all year

10. Clubs were so small that most people had a leadership position

11. The few businesses your town had were BOOMING because no one wanted to drive 30 minutes for better stuff

12. You became close with teachers because you had them multiple times a day for different subjects

13. The homecoming dance was held inside the school gym

14. You couldn't do anything bad because you'd be branded the rest of your high school career

15. Everyone knew everyone's else's business

16. Your response when people ask you where you're from is the closest well-known city because you know no one has ever heard of your town

17. The "cool place" to hang out was the school parking lot

18. Without a doubt, you always ran into someone you knew when you ran errands

19. Football is the town's main source of entertainment

20. Most families in your town have been there for generations

21. When someone's family was having a hard time, the town supported them in whatever way possible

22. You often heard "I'm sorry, I already bought..." when asking people to buy something for a fundraiser

23. Everyone couldn't wait to graduate and leave town

24. But once you did, you realized you missed it, even just a little bit

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
