I’m very picky when it comes to movies and shows. Whenever I’m given recommendations, I don’t tend to follow through with them because I never know how I’ll react to them. This time, I’m so happy that I followed through.
My good friend Linda recommended a Netflix Original series to me sometime last year and for whatever reason, I decided to give it a go.
Netflix Originals are very hit or miss for me, so I was wary at first. As I began watching the series, I quickly realized that I wasn’t fully prepared for the content, but I felt it necessary to continue watching, as the show touched upon many taboo topics and real-life situations.
As the title insinuates, the plot is centered around eight main characters. The show follows these characters from across the globe as well as their families and friends, creating one cohesive story made up of these eight individual ones. Their lives become intertwined due to the connection they have with one another.
Anyone who has watched and enjoyed the show knows how hard it must be for me to not give anything away because the show is just that good that I want to share it with everybody. But I’m a woman of my word, no spoilers.
I will say, however, that Sense8 has touched every one of my emotions, often multiple times per episode. I can go from laughing hysterically to smiling ear to ear to bawling my eyes out in the span of twenty minutes. Each episode is roughly an hour, save for the two-hour Christmas special and the two-hour finale that is coming soon (to be released sometime in 2018). Sense8 never fails to amaze me and give me goosebumps.
Creators Lilly Wachowski, Lana Wachowski, and J. Michael Straczynski have created a well-written and cinematically beautiful masterpiece. Aforementioned, each main character is from a different part of the world, and each individual story was filmed in that part of the world at real locations, rather than in a studio in front of a blue or green screen.
These expenses add up, unfortunately, coming out to roughly $9 million per episode, and ultimately led to the show’s cancellation. People felt so strongly about this series that the outcry to renew it was too great for nothing to be done. Fans and cast alike waited anxiously as the creators announced that Netflix had allowed for a two-hour finale to air. This amazing feat goes to show how powerful this show really is to people and how much love has been spread because of it.
You experience so much joy, sadness, pain, passion, love, courage, fear, and determination by watching the Sensates fight their way through every situation they’re thrown into. If you plan on watching this show, however, I must inform you that you need to pay close attention to events and situations, otherwise you will likely get confused.
I’m a self-proclaimed lover of powerful quotes, so I figured I’d end with one of my favorite ones from the show. “We make choices, and life has a way of making us pay for them,” -Daniela.
