Seeing From A Different Perspective

Time to grow a backbone.

Seeing From A Different Perspective
Dallis Blackburn

All my life I have been kind to those who didn't deserve it. I truly believe that many of us can relate to this.

I have never been blessed with enough confidence or security within myself to stand my ground the way that I should, in other words my backbone is more like a spaghetti noodle.

Why am I this way? Why is it so easy for other people to cut someone off, or literally stop caring?

I have never considered myself to be a people-person, until I went off to college my freshman year. I realized the true value of friendships, roommates, and even relationships with professors and advisers. Because when you're feeling down-in-the-dumps that is what can bring you straight out.

At the end of the day however, when everyone has gone to bed and you are awake and alone surrounded by darkness, that is when the devil really comes out to play. Then there's this overwhelming feeling that consumes your soul and you realize, no matter who is in your life, you are the cause of your own self-destruction and the only one who can really help you, is yourself.

What are we doing? My fellow spineless peers? I know I'm not the only one out there. Why do we keep doing this crap to ourselves? Chasing down the wrong guy/girl, letting bullies get in our heads, letting people walk all over us, not fighting for what we believe in...etc.

It's because there is something inside of us that is missing and we are on the search of our lives to try and fill the gap that is there. But the truth is, nothing really fills that gap. Not sex, drugs, alcohol, control, compulsions, temptations...etc. The problem is not physical, or what's in front of us but what's inside of us. There is something wrong with us. We are our own issue.

Lets team up rather than beat each other up. Lets say all lives matter instead of one race, gender, or sexuality. Everyone matters, everyone deserves happiness, everyone needs to feel accepted, loved, wanted, cared for, and appreciated.

But first, like Michael Jackson once said, you gotta look at yourself and make that change. Choose to be strong, choose a healthier lifestyle, choose to do what's right for yourself rather than doing what's easiest. We are special and unique, so why are we letting ourselves be put down and taken advantage of? Why are we settling for less when we are worth so much more?

We deserve life.

We deserve happiness.

Lets just be the people we were created to be, and everything else will fall into place within time.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
