For much of history, there have been three types of people: the rule makers, the rule followers, and the rule breakers.
Now, the rule breakers are without rules, setting them apart from everyone else. They exhibit power and use it to their full ability, uncaring on the thoughts and concerns of those they place rules over. The rule followers, on the other hand, have a fear about them, fear that some grave, irreversible consequence will come from the breaking of rules set upon them.
They don’t make waves, they even create their own allusion that the rules they follow exist for their own good. These individuals are upstanding, but not outstanding. Then, on the third corner of the triangle, are the rule breakers; the hackers, risk-takers, obsessors, deifiers…the ones who do things in their lives. In the words of Doctor Horrible, “Destroying the status quo because the status is not quo.”
Those you find ways around the system, end up changing the system all together. That’s why the most successful people in the world, are the ones who strayed from the beaten path: Steve jobs, Thomas Edison, and Martin Luther, just to name a few. In today’s world, people are becoming strayers from the path more often than ever, and this may be due to a sense of egotistical narcissism, but that is entirely irrelevant when the result is considered.
Whether it is finding a movie for free online while it is still in theaters, or downloading the latest phone software months before it is released, todays generation has become so accustomed to breaking the status quo that its expected. Kids in school aren’t being awarded for having the most friends, or the best attendance, or getting in the least amount of trouble; they get scholarships for thinking and acting in a way that pushes the world forward, and doesn’t just keep it in a stalemate. This is essential for the world to move forward, both intellectually and physically.
There is no safe route anymore, there is only choosing to take a chance, or leaving your life to chance. It only makes sense to do what is unexpected, not necessarily what is considered wrong. What is truly wrong is doing anything other than what you feel is right, regardless of what consequence becomes of it or what personal harm is resulted. One thing is for certain in life and that is it’s end. Whether the choice is only between the mundane and the extraordinary, only one can result in change, in progression.
Every man and woman owes it to themselves to do whatever they can to be as important as they can, and one does not become important by doing what they are told. The world is like clay, we can make anything of it. Or, we can leave it in its container until it dries and hardens, eventually turning to dust.
