Adam Morris is a rising star on the trance music scene - which has gone through a number of iterations since emerging out the mid-90s techno landscape. It’s a genre that seemed bound to happen with techno’s growing popularity back then that eventually found itself going into an overly commercial place and thereby abandoning its underground roots. Enter trance music with it’s melodic grooves and soft techno undertones. The groundbreaking music genre quickly took over the popular rave scene as it transitioned into what is now commonly referred to as electronic dance music also known as EDM of course.
Like its predecessor techno, trance started off in a sophisticated underground place eventually moving into somewhat exceedingly commercial territory but back again to quality via a more progressive sound. And this is the space where up-and-coming L.A-based producer/DJ Adam Morris shines es exhibited by his debut EP “I See You” (2017) that can be likened to the work of such trance heavy-hitters as Armin van Buuren and Ferry Corsten.
Morris starts off the “I See You” EP with the gorgeous Original Mix of the title track. It's solid progressive trance glistening with sophisticated grooves and lush production. Think Paul van Dyk in his still continuing hey day. Russian transplant and Sacramento-based trance producer/DJ Igor Dyachkov takes “I See You” into uplifting trance terrain through his epic sonance and hard-driving techno beats. Dyachkov’s remix also includes a powerful performance by L.A.-based rock/R&B/EDM songstress Katty McGrew whose beautiful and heartfelt vocals perfectly complement the “I See You” soundscape. McGrew’s voice fits nicely in the background of the track’s hyper-paced EDM but during the breakdown parts takes a more upfront position. The EP even offers up an “I See You” dub version courtesy of Dyachkov giving listeners more of an underground flair. The inspired melodies of “Nova” close the EP out showcasing the capability of Morris to create sleek, commercial harmonies with an alternative edge.
The trance music realm continues to morph and evolve since its beginning. Tracks of the “I See You” EP exemplify the direction of today’s trance scene while saluting its early roots. From bringing in top-notch talent like McGrew and Dyachkov to presenting Morris in his own solo right, the release is a great glimpse into the electronic dance music space of now and what more can comes.
