This is kind of an interesting article to write about, just because it isn't really an article but more of a method of reaching out to other UT undergraduate girls who feel that they'd love to get more involved on campus. This group has really allowed me to become comfortable with the environment I've come to, and I'm so grateful for all of the wonderful girls I've met.
Sigma Delta Tau (SDT) is one of the 14 Panhellenic sororities on campus who go through informal recruitment (i.e. we don't start recruitment in the summer and have different events that happen during the summer as well). Fun Fact: This is also the only Texas SDT chapter! I suppose the fact that the sorority doesn't go through formal recruitment, it may be smaller, but it is a very diverse place, where every girl offers a different perk about herself, yay! I joined this sorority last semester as a junior, and that did feel rather intimidating, especially because most people who join orgs are mainly underclassmen (in my experiences at least). To be honest, I wasn't recruited through any tabling, I actually asked one of my fellow sisters about the sorority I heard she had been a part of, and once she told me about the events I then checked out their recruitment events. But really, if you're an upperclassman who is a little skeptical about joining an org this late in college, I swear IT'S NOT TOO LATE! Although I did feel a little weird being one of the older girls there, there still is a ton of other girls who have more wisdom than me in some aspects, and I think that's really refreshing. It's also very surprising to find some of the other girls that could be involved in an organization. For example, at one of the recruitment events, I found a girl who was in my ochem lab who I would awkwardly ask for help from all the time, and my genetics TA who I was super intimidated by because I looked up to her, lol. But honestly, everyone I met last semester was so genuine and welcoming. I also think it's so refreshing to hear about the upbringings of different people, because it's all so different, I knew it was very different for me. I'm from the Rio Grande Valley which is like a few hours north of Mexico, so coming to Austin was a HUGE culture shock (i.e. 98% Hispanic --> not as many Hispanics). But, these group of girls opened up their arms to me and were happy I could share my own experiences with them.
I know what some of you are thinking: "But, I'm not the sorority type." Honestly, what even is that type? I think we tend to have a preexisting notion of that phrase, especially when we enter into college. Trust me when I say I am the most boring person ever. I love people BUT I am perfectly content watching Netflix or Hulu (any streaming service really) and having pizza and/or popcorn along with it. I'm one of the biggest homebodies I know, and I'm AWKWARD AS HELL. But also trust me when I say that I was NOT the only one like that in this sorority. It was here that I was able to make more gal pals that appreciated my style (and my humor too because I'm not funny). I also found study buddies, heck yes. I am too shy to ask anyone to study with me but now I have people asking me to study with them??? That is SUCH a blessing.
Sorry if I'm just throwing all this information out at any of you. No one might even read this article, but I wanted to make it known that I love this place and I'm ecstatic that it loves me back. Although this article is going out, you guys should totally come to our tabling that is going on Monday-Tuesday of next week that will take place outside of Greg Gym on Speedway, as well as in Jester. I wanna see all of y'all's beautiful faces.
