Last spring I took a course at Mount Saint Mary’s called Media in society. One of the most prominent topics of the class was the aspect of privacy. Unfortunately, it is a diving topic because it is impossible to have both privacy and absolute freedom. In fact, many argue through the nothing to hide fallacy meaning that why would people mind higher invention if they are not hiding anything. Of course, this contrasts constitutional rights of every citizen having privacy. This thinking also became more prominent after the events of 9/11 as safety was quickly prioritized. The continuation of technology growth also has heavily influenced people’s perspectives on privacy. This can be seen in a shift through people’s reactions of getting their pictures taken in public places, an example of this is people of Walmart. In the near future I suspect that there will be stricter legislation on information that is available on the internet. Personally, I think that’s achieving privacy in the world today is nearly impossible making online reputation very valuable.
