Meet Billie Eilish.

Here's the backstory.

A 15-year-old girl from Los Angeles who will change the way we view music. Billie is an artist raised in Los Angeles, California. She and her older brother Finneas (age 20) were both homeschooled by their 2 parents. Billie’s mom thought it would be best for the pair to focus in on things they were interested in, instead of being forced to learn things they would never need to know.

So Billie focused on dance and singing. She’s been singing since she was a toddler but it wasn’t until she was 8 years old that she joined the Los Angeles Children’s Choir so she could learn to properly sing. Finneas also was pursuing the music industry when he also was apart of the children’s choir as well as starting his own band The Slightly’s in 2011. In 2015, Finneas wrote a song for his band but let his sister perform it in front of her dance company. Billie’s dance teacher loved the song and asked her to record it so her teacher could choreograph a piece for the recital.

Finneas and Billie decided to throw out the song on Soundcloud and within a couple of days, their ballad called “Ocean Eyes” not only landed Billie a record deal at 13 years old but also got over 50K plays during the first 2 weeks.

Why should you care about Billie Ellish?

Billie Eilish is a presence. She has more talent in her left pinky than most artist will ever have. Eilish has a keen eye for fashion, making every room she walks into remember her. “I like to be remembered, so I like to look memorable,” Eilish tells a reporter from Papermag, “I think I’ve proved to people that I’m more important than they think.” And she absolutely has. With her frosted blonde hair, her giant puffy coats and her perfectly defined ‘Cara Delevingne’ eyebrows, it’s hard to believe she is only 15!! But her modern-bohemian style isn’t what makes her stand out.. it’s her voice.

Billie has a soft and mesmerizing voice. It’s very mature, like she has been singing for 20+ years instead of only being born in 2002. Vogue magazine predicts her to be the next Lana Del Rey and Lorde. You would think that Billie would draw from them as inspiration when actually all her influences are rappers! Her biggest influences are Tyler, The Creator, and Drake. On top of her kick-ass style and the god’s given voice, Eilish writes all her own songs and they are haunting. She paints herself a character and writes tales of heartbreak and borderline phycopath ballads that are surprisingly SO relatable. In her hit song Bellyache, she talks about trying to find herself by going through a reckless phase that we all have gone through.

“Where’s my mind? / Maybe it’s in the gutter / where I left my lover / what an expensive fate. My ‘V’ is for Vendetta / thought that I’d feel better / now I’ve got a bellyache.”
“Everything I do, the way I wear my noose / like a necklace. / gotta make them scared, like I could be anywhere / like I’m reckless.”

Eilish says, “You don’t have to be in love to write a song about love. And you don’t have to be happy to write a song about being happy. And you don’t have don’t have to kill somebody to write a song about killing somebody, like I’m not going to go kill someone!” And—she’s right! In her spine-chilling song entitled COPYCAT speaks of someone who is trying to be just like her. The copycat is trying to steal Eilish’s style and stories meanwhile Eilish is trying to tell the copycat to watch their back instead of her’s - -

“By the way, you've been uninvited. / Cause all you say are all the same things I did.”

Billie is defiantly an artist to look out for. She recently came out with her first EP “Don’t Smile At Me” this year in 2017. She is going on a world tour with the album to over 25 cities around the globe and they’re all SOLD OUT. She sold out her worldwide tour in a day. With more almost half a million followers on insta and famous collabs like Khalid, this pop star is going FAR. You can also check out her song Ocean Eyes in tv shows like 13 Reasons Why and Everything, Everything.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
