Poodles are often mistaken to be some kind of high maintenance, personality-less breed that require a daily trip to the dog salon. Having a toy poodle for nine years, I can say that that is just another stereotype that proves to be false for these several reasons.
Poodles are smart, and kinda sly, too
Poodles are considered to be the second smartest breed of dog, right after the border collie. They read body language well, take little time to train, learn commands and tricks quickly, and know how to get your attention.
Poodles are easy to take care of
Because they are easy to train and adapt to their environment quickly, there is little worry about when it comes to these dogs. All they ask for is their owner's affection every once and a while.
They don't shed
My family considered getting a poodle because they are hypo-allergenic, meaning they don't shed a single bit. This is perfect if you have asthma, are mildly allergic to dogs, and/or like your carpet to be fur-free.
Poodles are animal-friendly
From what I've seen, poodles get along with other pets, and that includes larger dogs and cats. They don't fight aggressive dogs, they are unbothered by smaller animals, and they think birds are just a music box.
They do well with smaller children
A poodle's friendly demeanor can be seen with children and babies as well. They are aware of the fragility of a small child and see them as one of their own, looking after them and making sure they are mildly entertained at all times.
Poodles are loyal
Poodles are friendly with all humans but show a different kind of kindness and respect to their owner. They never leave their owner's side, following them wherever they go and listen to all commands.
They like to be active
Poodles love to get in a good exercise, whether that be running around outside playing catch or going for long walks. They play the adversarial role of a lap dog and an active dog (especially toy and mini poodles).
They are super snuggly
Some dogs don't like human affection in the form of hugs and cradling, but poodles seek it. My poodle, for example, will jump onto my lap the second I sit down and will find an open space to dig her head into, waiting for me to start giving her a belly rub.
Poodles are sweet and friendly dogs that are incredibly loyal to their owners. If you are considering getting a dog that is easy to look after and loves human companionship, look into these curly-haired creatures.
