The sun shined brightly,
The purity of its luminescent rays was evident.
Its light laid on top of the Earth’s surface,
On its children and on its snow,
Marking the melting of innocence.
But innocence, though bright and lovely in nature,
lies not in the face of a petulant toddler
who begs for chocolate through crocodile tears;
Not through the forced flowers in perfect shapes
In a flower garden, forced away from a natural growth into a captivity dependent on fertilizer.
Nor from the small footprints of birds and squirrels
In the dying snow
Where the sunflowers and the tulips
Plead to grow,
Trying to break through the cracks in the snow
Only to be drowned by the lack
Of the sun’s brilliant rays due to the snow’s chilling embrace
That causes frost to form on the skin of its
Leaves, stems, and petals
But hold ice within its core.
Innocence therefore lies within time’s constant tick
By holding eternity at our fingertips,
Choosing who to become
While enduring the thawing of the cold.
