You never realize how lucky you are

Until you watch the news

Until you watch a TV show

Until you walk the streets


Sometimes you think that the world will fight for you

But what happens when somebody wants to fight the world?


What happens if someone decides to walk into

Your home

Your school

Your work

With a gun

Then what?


What happens if someone decides to say something nasty

To your parents

To your friends

To you

Then what?


What happens if someone wants to fight

The pillow that lies on their bed

The person they bump into the street

The world

You

Then what?


You feel like you can't walk the Earth in peace

It truly feels like that


I talk to my parents and my friend

Imagine if that happened to you

Or someone you knew

Then what?


You never realize how lucky you are

Until you are hugged

Until you are kissed

Until you are loved

Until you do.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots.
