My Life Through Lyrics

One of the best things life has to offer is music. The songs that remind me of a memory or hype me up for a future moment, are the ones I remember and love the most. So, I decided to make a playlist of songs that reflect moments of my life that had a strong impact on me. Some of them will have some background information while others will have the lyrics speak for them. Also, I took specific lyrics from the songs so the lines may not be in order.

Enjoy and I recommend these songs. :)

1. Living with my Grandparents in Alabama

I was born in NJ, but my Grandparents decided to take care of me and took me to Alabama with them. We lived in the house my Granddad built and had a mini farm with goats, chickens and a rooster with extremely long nails.

Put your Records on- Corinne Bailey

Sapphire and faded jeans, I hope you get your dreams,

Just go ahead, let your hair down,

You’re gonna find yourself somewhere, somehow.

2. Losing my Grandfather

(Grandfather is on the right My Grandmother is on the left.)

I was too young to remember him passing away. One day he was there, the next day he wasn’t. But, one of my aunts told me that at his funeral I said “Pop Pop has wings now.”

This was his favorite song:

Superstition-Stevie Wonder

Keep me in your daydream, keep me goin’ strong,

You don’t want to save me, sad is my song,

When you believe in things you don’t understand,

Then you suffer,

Superstition ain’t the way.

3. Moving back to NJ

My Grandmother and I had most of our family in New Jersey so we wanted to visit. Sadly, I had to leave my poodle, Frenchie, behind. And since I went down to AL at a young age, I didn’t remember NJ too much so it felt like…

A Whole New World-from Aladdin. Sung by Lea Solange and Brad Kane.

A Whole New World,

A new fantastic point of view.

Unbelievable sights, indescribable feeling.

4. Losing my Grandmother

(Portrait of my Grandmother, drawn by my Aunt)

Her favorite song:

His Eye is on the Sparrow Written by Civilla D. Martin. Originally sung by Mahalia Jackson.

My constant friend is He:
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me;
His eye is on the sparrow,
And I know He watches me.

5. Discovering my passion for writing in Middle School

Love Song- The Cure

Whenever I’m alone with you,

You make me feel like I am whole again.

Whenever I’m alone with you,

You make me feel like I am free again.

6. HS Graduation

Tonight-Spica (Kpop girl group)

Tonight, tonight is the night, our time that we waited for so long.

We’re all the main characters, don’t go home early.

It all shines on me and I dream once again.

7. Failing my road test

Ghost-Mystery Skulls

And I’m feeling like a ghost,

And it’s what I hate the most.

Cause I’m giving up again.

This time I might just disappear.

8. Starting College

A moment from the freshmen dorms. By the way, I'm just an observer, I didn't do this. That seemed like it took a lot of effort and I'm too lazy.

Believer-Imagine Dragons

I’m the one at the sail, the master of my sea.

You made me a, you made me a believer, believer,

(Pain Pain)

You break me down, you build me up, believer, believe.

9. Losing my Father

Since my dad didn’t raise me and lived in another state, I didn’t know him that well. When I reunited with my half siblings last year, I was able to learn more about him, but I never got to see him. He was the one that gave me my name. He’s the reason I keep my name though it's strange and I always have to explain it. I consider my name the gift that he gave me. I never learned what his favorite song was.

Daddy's Little Girl-Frankie J

Trying to hold back time, to keep him holding on,

And she says,

Daddy, daddy, don't leave
I'll do anything to keep you right here with me
Can't you see how much I need you.

10. Getting my 1st job

I know this song talks about being high and drunkenness, but I’m not doing any of that at work I promise! I chose this song because my job makes me happy and I’m extremely grateful for it.

Hymn for the Weekend- Coldplay

You know you make my world light up.

When I was down, when I was hurt,

You came to lift me up.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
