Rocking Around The Clock

A song for every hour of the day

Being a college student, I find myself awake at different times just about everyday, and I'm usually listening to music to keep myself awake. Sometimes I'll come across a song that plays during the time that the song is named after, such as a song called 7 a.m. playing at 7 in the morning. This gave me the idea to find a song for every hour of the day, and now let's rock around the clock (I know it's a bad pun).

12 a.m. or Midnight: In the Midnight Hour by Wilson Pickett

I was honestly a little underwhelmed by the selection of songs for midnight. There are some classics, but only a few that really feel like they embody midnight for any day of the week. In the Midnight Hour is definitely the one that feels like a good song for midnight on a Tuesday or a Saturday.

1 a.m.: One in the Morning by Scott Shelby

Truth be told, I would have never of this guy if it hadn't been for this list, but I am glad I did. There wasn't much to work with for this time slot, and I found this song slightly more enjoyable than the YG and Stevie Stone rap songs.

2 a.m.: 2 AM by SZA

A remix of Party Next Door's "Come and See Me," SZA takes the track and makes it her own. It's just a good song, with a good beat and good flow. I feel like I would have higher praise if I could relate, but still a solid song for just about any 2 a.m.

3 a.m.: 3 a.m. by Eminem

3 a.m. might be the hardest hour to choose from because there were four song in legitimate contention for this hour. Eminem got the nod because, at 3 a.m., I usually need something to keep me awake while doing homework, and one of the songs was too slow and emotional. The other two songs, by Matchbox Twenty and Jesse & Joy, Gente de Zona respectively, didn't quite capture the that 3 a.m. feeling of being sleep deprived and go slightly crazy while working or studying.

4 a.m.: 4 AM by Melanie Fiona

Before I explain this pick I've got to ask, does anyone remember when does song was EVERYWHERE for like a month, because I completely forgot it was a thing until I started this. Still, it is a good song for 4 a.m. if you are missing your significant other. I feel like that is just the trend for this time of day because it's between the bars closing and the next day starting.

5 a.m.: 5 O'Clock by T-Pain ft Wiz Khalifa, Lily Allen

Oh look, it's what happens when you make the last song into a conversation. All jokes aside, this song is really good at story telling, and the music video is cool, if for nothing else, T-Pain's transparent phone. I kinda wanted to pick 5AM by Logic, but he decided to not mention the time, or any time, during the actual song.

6 a.m.: 6 AM by J Balvin ft. Farruko

Now I know what you're thinking if you actually clicked the link to the song, "It's a Spanish song," and you're right, but it does a good job representing that 6 a.m. feeling after a party. I could've put 6 AM by Melanie Fiona and T-Pain, but it isn't as good. Besides, listening essentially the same song each hour can get boring.

7 a.m.: 7AM by Lil Uzi Vert

Personally, I'm not a big fan of this song, but people seem to like it and him, and the song fits the criteria. This song is essentially morning motivation for the hustlers, which isn't bad if your trying to get up and get money. Now excuse me while I go listen to some good rap music and apologize for praising Lil Uzi Vert.

8 a.m.: Early in the Morning at 8 o'clock by MooDaMoo

So instead of putting some trash song on here, I'm putting a little nursery rhyme on here. Of all the songs I found that could represent 8 a.m., this was the best one by far, mainly because it's merciful enough to be short.

9 a.m.: 9 AM by Londonbeat

This song is just beautiful. That's really all I can say about. A beautiful song for a 9 a.m. commute.

10 a.m.: 10 A.M. by Left Boy

If you have ever been working so hard on something that you disappear for a few days, then you'll probably enjoy this song. I'm also writing this entry at 10 a.m., so I've got that feeling. This song is creative and has high energy, which is perfect for 10 a.m.

11 a.m.: 11:11 by Austin Mahone

This might be considered cheating, but it's my list so I make the rules and I'm counting this song. It's stereotypical teeny bopper stuff, but it fits what Austin Mahone is and does. Sometimes people just need that kind of music.

12 p.m. or Noon: High Noon by Frankie Laine

Nothing like some good old school country to help with you mid-day blues. Honestly though, this song has some sad lyrics, but the instrumental is so melancholy that it doesn't really matter. Plus Frankie Laine has a smooth, calming voice that will help your afternoon drift away.

1 p.m.: Dallas 1 PM by Saxon

So this song has almost nothing to do with the time of day, other than it being the time when President Kennedy was assassinated. Despite that fact, it's a good song that I couldn't ignore for this list. Plus a few guitar solos can get that post-lunch energy flowing.

2 p.m.: The 2 O'clock Club by Bona Fide

I originally wanted this to be songs with lyrics, but this song was too good and too fitting to not go here. I'm not much of a slow jazz guy, I prefer big band, but this is something that is relaxing enough that I like it. At two in the afternoon, a little smooth jazz can be really nice working music, or so my high school teachers told me.

3 p.m.: 3:30 PM by Stalley

I thought it was hard finding a song for 1 a.m., but 3 p.m. is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. This song by Ohio rapper Stalley is decent, and it somewhat fits the motif of the list. Especially if you like to travel.

4 p.m.: 4PM @ the Kappa by Big K.R.I.T.

To be honest, I'm not sure what the Kappa is, so my explanation might be wrong, but my understanding is that it is a massive beach party in Gavelston, Texas, which kinda fits the song. A darty (day party) at four in the afternoon can use this to turn up, and everyone else can fantasize about partying. Plus Big K.R.I.T. spit a ridiculous freestyle on this song that is worth a listen.

5 p.m.: It's Five O'Clock Somewhere by Alan Jackson,Jimmy Buffet

With the rules I set for myself, I could only place this song here, but you can place this anytime and it'll fit. What you want to do is play it at 4:56 p.m. so you can finish at 5 p.m. to really enjoy it.

6 p.m.: 6 O'Clock by Devvon Terrell

This song is a perfect song when you are driving after a long day and just need to relax. It's short, but after a long day, that is a good thing. Devvon Terrell delivers a great day-ending song with this one.

7 p.m.: 7 O'clock News / Silent Night by Simon and Garfunkel

This is one of the most creative songs I have ever heard. Mixing the news story in the song with Silent Night make the atmosphere almost chilling. On a bad day, this is good for the 7 p.m. time slot.

8 p.m.: 8 O'Clock Scene by The Casals

An old-school date night song that is short, simple, and to the point. There is not a whole lot else to say about this one. Gives this one a listen before date night for a little extra energy.

9 p.m.: Nine in the Afternoon by Panic! at the Disco

A good follow-up to the last entry, this song comes with a during the date kinda vibe. Also, it's Panic! at the Disco doing what they always do, so if you're a fan you should be listening to this at 9 p.m. anyway. Then again I don't listen to them much, so take that last opinion with a grain of salt.

10 p.m.: Clock Strikes 10 by Cheap Trick

Ideal for a Saturday, but viable any night, this song can get you hyped for any night. The drums just bring adrenaline out of a person, which can be useful even for a night in. Sometimes you need a little energy when the clock strikes ten.

11 p.m.: 11 O'clock by Morphine

We're ending with a weird one, but a fitting one. Going out at 11 O'clock at night is more of a weekend thing, but there are some people who make it an everyday thing, which is the Rock 'n Roll way. So Rock on!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
