Pink, singer of a lot of popular songs including "Just Give Me a Reason", "Girl on Fire", and "Try" was the winner of the "Video Vanguard Award" at Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards. Her acceptance speech was dedicated to her six year old daughter, Willow, and it was an inspiring message to everyone watching.
When Willow, her six year old daughter, tells Pink that she thinks as herself as the "Ugliest girl I know", instead of responding, Pink went home and made a power point presentation on all of the celebrities who are made fun of on the daily, but don't change who they are based on other people's opinions.
Pink's speech gave me hope.
"And I said, 'Do you see me growing my hair?' And she said, 'No, mama." 'Do you see me changing my body?' 'No, mama.' 'Do you see me changing the way I present myself to the world?' 'No, mama.' 'Do you see me selling out arenas all over the world?' 'Yes, mama.'
Her message was simple, but distinct: people (in her case, artists) shouldn't change who they are to accommodate other people. This speech gave me hope on a personal level. I have severe anxiety, and am always worried about what other people are going to think of me. I fear negative judgement and not being accepted, to the point where social settings sometimes makes my anxiety heighten. I have also been diagnosed with Severe Depression Disorder, which increases when I feel unaccepted or left out. Pink's speech made me realize that we are who we are, and people's judgements are irrelevant. Pink states:
"We don’t change — we take the gravel in the shell, and we make a pearl,”
Her words on self-expression and tolerance were pure and wholesome. It gave me hope to someday see a world with less judgment and more expression. Thank you, Pink for helping me believe in life a little bit more!
