Pet bunnies are not the most common of animals to have as a pet. Because of this, many people stay away because they do not know how to take care of a bunny or what to expect from one. As a proud bunny owner, I have compiled a list of some need to know things when thinking about adopting a new best friend.
1. They have emotions just like you
Bunny rabbits have feelings just like anything else with a brain and because of that, as a pet owner you have to understand that sometimes your bunny will be having a bad day and not be in the mood to cuddle or play with you but that does not mean they hate you or that you are a bad caretaker. There will also be lots of times when they want love and cuddles, don't worry.
2. Only specific foods are okay for bunny rabbits to eat
Along with their pet store food, bunnies are allowed to and should eat some greens. There are thousands of lists online so if you don't know if your bunny can eat it, just look it up.
3. Bunnies get bored
Obviously, you're not going to leave your bunny a piano to play around on but make sure they have chew toys to play with and keep them busy when you're gone.
4. There are ways to calmly introduce your bunny into new environments
This style varies animal to animal but make sure if you are putting your bunny into a new place, you do it in a way that they feel safe.
5. They like to chew
Bunnies have a habit of chewing everything they see. They do this because their teeth are constantly growing and they need to continuously grind them down. There is a common misconception that bunnies chew wires but just make sure they have other things to chew on and you'll be fine.
6. Bunnies need special vets who can accommodate a bunny rabbits need
Bunnies are technically a unique animal to have as a pet so make sure when bringing them to the vet for checks, you are going to a doctor who specializes in these types of animals.
7. They purr just like dogs and cats
This can often come as a rarity but bunnies do in fact purr just like cats or dogs. After being petted for a while or when they are really calm and happy, bunnies make a vibration, softer kind of purr that is to die for.
8. Bunnies binky when they're super happy
What is a binky you ask? Only one of the cutest things in the world. When a bunny gets really happy, they will run around and flail their body in the air and click their feet around. They basically go on turbo mode and run in circles on high speed.
9. Bunnies are prey animals so they can be afraid of the outdoors
If you are going to take your bunny outside (I take mine out when the weather is nice and yes, he has a leash) make sure you stay near them and have them in a pen or on a leash so they don't run away if they get frightened.
10. Bunnies eat some of their poop
This sounds nasty, but as part of their diet, bunnies have this weird type of poop that is different from the regular poop that they eat, so don't clean it up if you see it, it's normal.
11. Bunnies do not need baths because they clean themselves
Giving your bunny a bath can actually terrify them and put them into a shock. Like cats, bunnies lick themselves to get clean so you do not have to worry about bathing them.
12. They are most active at dusk and dawn
The rumors that bunnies are nocturnal and sleep all day and keep you up all night are false. Actually, bunnies are crepuscular which means they are most active at dusk and dawn.
13. They are absolutely adorable

14. They get startled easily

15. Bunnies shed a lot
You will have bunny hair all over you, all the time. But know that it's worth it and simply keep a lint roller around.
16. They love to explore and are very curious creatures
Bunny rabbits, like any other animal, like to climb all over everything and explore in their new environments.
17. They make amazing pets
I love my bunny to the ends of the earth and don't regret a second of having him. Sometimes they're a pain in the butt but we love them just the same. Recommendation? Yes.
