It's no secret that as humans, we want to please the people around us. I don't know of many people that deep deep down can say that they have never felt inadequate because this desire to please everyone was unsuccessful. It has been on my heart for quite some time, and I trust wholly in the fact that it is time to share what the difference between working for man and working for God looks like.
"Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ" -Colossians 3:23-27.
This couple of verses in Colossians is pretty straightforward if you ask me. God is saying to: 1) Work as hard as you can with all of your heart. 2) Do it for the Lord and NOT for man. 3) All while KNOWING that your reward in Heaven is so much greater than any reward on earth.
So, why do we feel this constant pressure to please everyone around us? Why do we feel the need to be worried about what others think of our performance, or our work?
To put it pretty simply, working for man will always cause you to come up short. In some way, shape, or form you are going to let someone on this earth down. I am 19 years old and have let PLENTY of people down in my lifetime- does it make me less of a person? No. Does it make me unworthy of His love? Absolutely not.
Working for God is working for something that is ETERNAL. You will NEVER let God down.
Understand this: Dedicating your work to God is not ignoring the people around you, in fact it will strengthen your outward mindset and impact on those around you. BUT dedicating your work to man will lead to you neglecting God.
Why WOULDN'T you choose to dedicate your work to God? He is the whole reason you are working anyways.
I do not say any of this to make anyone feel that "Wow I'm a horrible person woe me" feeling. I say it to encourage you with the fact that there is FREEDOM FROM THE FEAR OF MAN.
If you work for man the bar will continuously be raised and you will spend your whole life trying to reach it, just for it to be raised again.
If you work for God with all of your heart NOT ONLY will your capabilities be absolutely endless, your reward will be eternal.
You choose. Obedience to God will demolish the people pleaser in you.
