Turkey day is still an important day.
People tend to gloss right over Thanksgiving as soon as Halloween is over. My suitemate is one of those people who started to play Christmas music, basically the day after Halloween. I don't want to be hearing Christmas music until after Thanksgiving.
But Thanksgiving is still an important holiday. Thanksgiving literally celebrates the founding of our land so I don't understand why people don't tend to take Thanksgiving seriously. It has been celebrated on and off since 1789 when George Washington made the proclamation. It brings families together and is a time to stuff your gut full of turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, and cranberries. Giving thanks, prayer, feasting, spending time with family, football games and parades.
For me, Thanksgiving is a time for me to see the family I don't normally see on an everyday basis. We sit around for hours just talking and hanging out.
Then we sit down for a traditional Thanksgiving meal with some of our own little family flares. Last year, for example, my grandma sat down with a whole pie to eat all for herself. We have created our own little family traditions such as running a 5K the day of Thanksgiving called the Turkey Trot.
Then we made the three-hour drive to Michigan to be with family. I love the warm feeling that surrounds Thanksgiving as a whole.
Christmas has become so commercialized that it adds a whole new month to the Christmas season. People automatically shift their brains into shopping and winter mode when there is still a whole other month full of fall.
Personally, the Christmas season is nice but it comes way too early. And let's face it we all know that one person who gets too over excited about Christmas and annoys you until its December.
There are so much stress and pressure during the Christmas season that should be another reason for liking Thanksgiving. All you need to do is relax and be with family, sitting down for a huge or lowkey meal.
