An Open Letter To My Rock

You helped me through the worst of times, and helped fix me and I could not be more grateful to have a friend like you in my life then and now.

To my 'person,'

You always had a way of knowing exactly what to say and when to say it and without you, I’m not so sure where I’d be today. I could spend the rest of my life thanking you for everything that you have done or me, but that still wouldn’t do you justice, so this is the best I can do.

Thank you for never asking why I was silent all day. You just sat next to me and waited until I could find the energy to say anything. You never left in those moments of silence that could last hours; you simply stayed by me and weathered the storm.

Thank you for always knowing when I needed you and what I needed to hear from you. I could have been fooling everyone else that life was cruising by just fine but you always knew otherwise. Not only did you know, you knew exactly the words I needed to hear. Whether it was simply saying that it’s okay to not be okay all the time, or that you were right next to me whenever I was ready to talk about it, you had perfect timing.

Thank you for being non-judgmental. For every mistake I made, you had an anecdote to make my story feel like a grain of sand. While the rest of the world thought that everything that happened was the worst thing to be done in our little town, you never belittled me for anything. You brought me back up and said that I was better than the mistakes that I made even if what had happen was the worst thing that could have occurred. Even more so, you didn’t hate me for every time that I said I was alone while we both knew I had you as you.

Thank you for doing every stupid adventure with me. Whether it was traveling to a party across town or just speeding down the back-roads for the night, I knew I wouldn’t have to do either of them alone. You never allowed me to feel lonely in a time I felt most alone.

Thank you for not being my therapist. As much of a wreck I was, you weren’t perfect either. There was nothing that could have helped more than knowing that I wasn’t the only one whose life was in shambles. We had a give and take system and as much as I needed to tell you my problems to get through them, I needed you to me yours, too.

Lastly, thank you for still being there. You really are the Cristina to my Meredith, and even though you’re not here physically everyday, I know you’re still in my corner and just a phone call away. I can only hope you know that the same goes for me, and I’m rooting for you every chance I get. You pushed me through the worst of times, helped fix what needed fixing, and I could not be more grateful to have a friend like you in my life.

Love always,

Me

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
