It's okay to not know what you want to do.

An Open Letter To The Undecided Major

College is a time to figure out exactly what you want to do with your life. It is assumed that you will figure out exactly what you aspire to be and how to get there. But the truth is, most likely, that you have no idea where to begin. You have no idea what you want to do let alone how you want to do it. And that is perfectly okay.

They say that as soon as you turn 18 you become an adult, which is true. But just think about this for a second. Say you are 18 or 19 years old. Not too long ago you were graduating from high school, leaving your parents, and for some of you, learning to do laundry for the first time. With all of this adjustment going on in your life, it's okay to not be sure of what you want to do with it. There are adults, way out of college, who drop everything to pursue a new career. It's not the end of the world to admit that you do not have the slightest idea as to what you want.

You may think you know what you want to do but the truth is that most likely you'll change your mind. I know that some of you may enter your college careers sure of the fact that you'll be walking out as a doctor, teacher, journalist or physical therapist. Just know that plans change. While some of you will leave college with a degree in the profession you've always pictured yourself in, most of you won't. Don't let change scare you. Don't be afraid to admit to yourself that maybe you don't know right now. In my opinion asking an 18 or 19-year-old to decide what they want to do for the rest of their life is ridiculous. We have only gotten our feet wet in the large pool that is adulthood. There's nothing wrong with going into your college experience with all of your options open. The world "Undecided" should not scare you. If anything it should provide you with a freeing feeling. It is refreshing to not be tied down to a specific class or major and be allowed to explore every option available to you. The only way to actually figure out what you want is to try everything. You don't want to stick with the same major when you're not entirely sure that's what you want to do. There is no harm in trying something new as you can always go back to an old major.

In the end, you will figure it out. You might not see it that way now but eventually, things will start making sense. You may be wondering why it seems like you're the only one struggling with this problem but the truth is, everyone does at one point or another. Just because someone seems to know what they want doesn't mean they didn't struggle beforehand. Don't spend your time at college worrying and stressing about what major to choose, eventually, it will come to you. Enjoy your time by having fun and trying new things because soon enough it'll be time to get a full-time job and truly adult. While it can be overwhelming, just remember, everything works out in the end.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
