New York Fashion Week — or NYFW for short is one of New York's most popular events that occurs twice a year — usually in the winter and fall of each year. Most people try to attend it each year just for the sake of saying that they went to it, but getting in isn't that easy. You either have to be invited to the shows/events or try to find free events to attend either online or on social media. On the other hand, some people just stand outside of the different venues in hopes of something good happening to them. On the other hand, some people couldn't care less about the existence of Fashion Week and keep their lives going. Whatever your stance is on NYFW, here's what you should know and here's how to navigate it.
New York Fashion Week isn't just for fashion obsessed people.
Personally speaking, I couldn't care less as to what most of these new trends are. To me, they're either alright, straight up weird, or fabulous. Whenever I attend any of the NYFW events or shows, I'm usually not there to just see what's coming down the runway -- I'm also there to possibly network and maybe for the refreshments that are offered.... maybe.
You don't need to be an overly popular person to attend NYFW.
I like to think of myself as just an ordinary human being, but I've attended NYFW this year and last year. There are several ways to be able to attend the events and shows either for free or cheap. You can either be invited, search for "New York Fashion Week events to attend" online, or check any hashtags/the explore feature on Instagram, or you could check the events section on Facebook. Something's bound to pop up one way or another.
All events are exclusive and I have no chance of ever even seeing the front door.
While most NYFW events are exclusive, there are a handful of new designers and brands that do host free NYFW events to the general public that only require you to RSVP in an email and to show up. These kinds of events can be found in a Google search that'll take less than ten seconds of your life.
Will there be celebrities?
Chances are, there will be celebrities. During September 2016 when Tommy Hilfiger and Gigi Hadid had their carnival at the seaport in the city, there were celebrities casually walking around my college's neighborhood. Such celebrities include Gigi Hadid herself, Kendall Jenner, Kris Jenner, and so on.
While you may think that NYFW is overrated and only for people that know people in the industry, it's super easy to be able to get in. Chances are, you know someone that knows someone that knows someone that's able to get you in. If this is something that you're interested in, great. If it's something that isn't of interest to you, that's fine too.
