Every VMAs has been memorable for some reason; this year kind of disappointed me. Kanye West basically summed it all up in his acceptance speech for the Video Vanguard Award, saying, "I still don't understand award shows." Me neither, Kanye, especially this one; but there were for sure some notable moments that have already created a huge buzz.
Miley Cyrus' outfits
When you have Miley hosting, you know there will be something memorable. She did manage to stay away from the twerking, but she definitely still made a scene. The worst part is her whole family is in the audience. I can't imagine what my dad would do if he saw me in an outfit like that. I just want the stylish Miley with the cute bun back.
Miley as a host in general
I actually felt awkward watching her host. She wanted to create a lot of energy and excitement, but I don't think she did anything other than make it uncomfortable for everyone with how not funny she was. We get it, Miley, you smoke weed. P.S. her new surprise "album" is very concerning.
Nicki Minaj calling out Miley Cyrus
This was definitely one of the biggest moments in the show. I truly do not understand how Miley didn't instantly pee her pants or cry. Nicki Minaj calling you out in front of everyone is a pretty big deal, but honestly I am still confused if this was real. It came out of nowhere; she accepted her award then BAM back to you, Miley, you "b*tch." How could she squash her drama with Taylor on stage then call out Miley? Watch it here.
Justin Bieber's performance
I literally don't know what to say besides WTF. The most annoying part is they kind of just brushed this off. Justin Bieber is crying on stage! How do you just ignore that and not make a thousand jokes about it? I was very disappointed he didn't say anything after like, "Hey guys sorry about my weird hair and the fact that I am crying on stage right now." I just hope this doesn't make Selena go crawling back to him.
Taylor giving Kanye his award
This just actually made me mad. This award is supposed to be a huge honor and a special moment for the recipient. Having Taylor give Kanye the award was so clearly a ploy for more ratings, as Kanye himself pointed out. Even though she did a good job and they both have clearly put their past behind them, it took away from the award. It made the focus of it on their relationship and drama, and that's not what it is about.Kanye's acceptance speech
If you weren't thoroughly confused during this whole speech, then I highly doubt we were watching the same thing. He did make several points in his speech that I'm sure were important, but I was lost. I think Kanye had no idea what he was saying and just hoped nobody noticed. Announcing that he's running for president in 2020 was a good way to distract the audience from his speech. I really want to know if he was planning on that or if he just decided right then he was gonna go for it. Can you imagine Kim Kardashian as our first lady...
This year's VMAs reminded me why I hate award shows, but still continue to watch them. They also made me realize how pathetic I am; I talked about all the celebrities as if they were my friends and I knew way too much about all of them.
However, in all seriousness, the worst part about this show is it doesn't even honor these artists' incredible talents and accomplishments. People aren't going to be talking about their work and their music videos; it is going to be all about the new drama and Kanye's future political campaign. I'd like to say I won't be watching next year, but realistically I know that's not true—I can't miss it if Taylor decides she's running against Kanye.
