A Not-So-Private Practice

A long overdue review of the Grey's Anatomy spin-off.

A Not-So-Private Practice

*Note: this article may contain some spoilers for the show!*

I tend to be late in the game when it comes to watching shows on Netflix. For instance, I found Once Upon a Time the summer before season four aired, and I caught up with the CW’s Arrow literally minutes before the season two finale aired live. Needless to say, my reviews are often late as well.

Recently, due to a withdrawal from Grey’s Anatomy, I ventured into the land of Private Practice, the spin-off that focuses on Addison Forbes Montgomery, the bad-ass double-board certified neonatal surgeon and OB/GYN. Us Grey’s fans get a taste of Private Practice before Shonda even made the show a thing when Addie went to LA to see if her best friend from college and fertility specialist, Naomi, could help her have a baby.

The 6-season-long series takes viewers on an emotional roller coaster, because that’s what Shondaland is. We go through the highs and lows of the doctors at Oceanside Health and Wellness Group as they experience them, from deaths of coworkers to really understanding why Amelia got the nickname “Hurricane Amelia” to finding true love and having babies. And, of course, the stress of medicine and surgery. Yes, I know that Oceanside isn’t a hospital, but it’s a spin-off of Grey’s, did you really think that there wouldn’t be any surgery?

I was very emotionally invested in this show, and despite mixed reviews from a friend, I pursued it all the way to its extremely anticlimactic end. The first season or two is absolutely phenomenal, but when coworkers start having relationships with one another, things just get messy and it’s like you’re back in high school all over again. So much drama, so little medicine, it just got really annoying really quickly. By season five, I was so sick of Sam and Addison’s relationship that I was ready to just call it quits. By season six, however, all I wanted to do was just finish the show so I could say I did it. The plot-lines were so intertwined and confusing, I started to lose serious interest. Plus, the last episode…it was just so uninteresting to me that I was so upset when it was over because it lacked the resolutions that I wanted. Shonda tried to resolve so many things – Addison adopting her son, Sam and Naomi reconciling, a Violet writing her last book, which, by the way, has a horrible title. Private Practice? Naming the book after the show? Really Shonda?

What I did like about the show, however, was that there were some plot-lines that really gripped me and dragged me in, mainly Amelia’s. We knew that Amelia had a past with drugs, that was openly stated in Grey’s. But in Private Practice, they made her relapse, which was a dark and intense plot that had me desperate for more episodes.

Another thing to look forward to was the overlaps with Grey’s Anatomy. Last I knew, they followed it up to the plane crash, and if there were any other references after it, I missed them.

Overall, though, Private Practice wasn’t that bad of a show. Sure, I had mixed emotions about it, but that’s just my opinion. Maybe you’ll have other opinions.

Might I just add – the doctors starring in Private Practice? They’re not private at all.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
