Have you ever heard of the Pop Network?
Cool. Me neither.
At least I hadn't until last summer when my mom and I found Ali Wentworth’s show Nightcap. A few years ago, I stumbled upon my mom’s copy of Ali in Wonderland, but never ended up reading it. Looking back, I wish I had gotten to know Ali Wentworth sooner. Her sense of humor is unbelievable, her life is always comical, and her work ethic is equally obscene and inspiring.
Nightcap covers what goes on behind the scenes of a fake late night TV show, following Staci and her crew as they interact with an assortment of celebrities. The guests, ranging from the Baldwins to YouTube celebrities, act as how media gossip portrays them to be, that is to say: hysterically glorified versions of themselves.
While most of the jokes are delivered in a deadpan, conversational fashion, the writing on the show is not to be underestimated. Incredibly witty and well thought out, you’ll only just finish laughing from one joke before they land the next one.
With great writing comes great screencaps, of course, and as we learned last week, there is quite literally nothing that I love more than a good screencap or gif to use as a reaction picture.
Phil the security guard, as you can tell, is my favorite character on the show. Unintentionally relatable, he states every rude mood and petty qualm I feel on a daily basis.
Now you may wonder: Why does this sound like Emily is making a sales pitch for this show? That’s because I am. This show is nothing if not incredibly binge-worthy: hysterical and tastefully self-deprecating, with characters you should hate but see yourself in, and (best of all) the episodes are a half hour each.
