Dear Nicole Arbour,

I'd like to start off with: Why?

I recently saw Childish Gambino's "This is America" music video, which tackled many issues within the nation in addition to how America views black culture. In my opinion, the video is a masterpiece. The imagery and dancing presented in the music video are meant to distract us from what is actually going on. The video parallels America in several ways: Jim Crow imagery that depicts African Americans stereotypes,America valuing black culture more than black lives, and social media crazes that distract us from what is actually going on with our society, and most shockingly gun violence and how society treats victims.

Then I saw your video. To say I was shocked would be an understatement.

Don't get me wrong, I understand what you were trying to do with your video. I got the underlying message of feminism, but how you went about it was very distasteful.

I think the worst part about this is that there's a lot of subtlety and symbolism to dissect in "This is America," and you, Nicole Arbour, you threw all that out the window and tried to invalidate the feelings of Black Americans through this parody.

It wasn't appropriate for you to piggyback on the success of Childish Gambino's "This is America," recreating a well-put video explaining the black experience in America to talk about white women in your version.

Your piggybacking on Gambino's success did not come as a surprise to many. You do have a history of being a problematic, fat shaming and racist individual. Stealing a black man’s music video and calling it a "woman's take" — seriously? Nicole, you do not speak for me or countless other women.

I don't think you meant the video in a malicious way, but I do think you should have known better, especially in this political climate. I also think you should have been creative in your own way instead of a way that minimizes the importance of "This is America."

I understand that you might have been trying to create dialogue and you did, it just wasn’t the right kind or what you were expecting

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
