Netflix’s lineup of shows and movies is ever-changing. In between summer classes, summer relationships, and summer jobs, how are you supposed to get the most binge for your buck? Look no further. Here are some movies and shows on Netflix to entertain yourself with this summer, in no particular order
1. "High School Musical 3"
If you’re a rising senior like me, you’ll have no trouble throwing it all the way back to 2008. 10 years ago and way before adulthood loomed near. If you’re not, you can cling to the hope that the crush you finally got to know in April who has to go back to his/her hometown in a city that’s far too far away will pull a Troy and plan a sweet surprise visit. Go Wildcats.
2. "License To Wed"
If you’re looking for one of the few films in which Mandy Moore doesn’t sing, this is it. Instead, she has to go through a marriage obstacle course with an unorthodox religious lilt in order to marry Jim Halpert – I mean, her boyfriend named Ben. If you’re averse to rom-coms do not desert this one! The courtship between Ben (John Krasinski) and Sadie (Moore) is not the focus! Robin Williams as a pushy, inappropriately pious priest is. What’s not to love?
3. "Trailer Park Boys"
They’re broke, they’re stupid, and they’re Canadian. This mockumentary-style television show chronicles in 22-minute-episodes the misadventures of three rude and rowdy deadbeats just out of jail who are total contrasts to a population generally portrayed as unflinchingly polite and agreeable.
If you don’t watch it for the comical portrayal of non-American bro culture, watch it for the amazing Nova-Scotian accents. And the grown man called Bubbles.
4. "The Loft"
This movie had some genuine surprises and twists at some points. It explores the poisonous dynamic of a group of grown men with a lot of money and, as a result, a lot of power. That power and the bond of the group falls apart when a woman is killed.
The characters are engrossingly easy to hate and are mostly easy on the eyes (James Marsden is on-screen a good bit). If you want a psychological thriller you can “watch” while scrolling through Twitter and the Discover section of Snapchat, this is the one for you.
5. "Kevin James: Never Don't Give Up"
In this Netflix comedy special, and in life, Kevin James is always able to laugh at himself which is something I think any and everyone can work on in 2018. James takes little seriously, except lactose intolerance. If you are lactose intolerant, you might be offended. But he offers a hilarious take on what life is like as a big man raising three little girls.
6. "Arrested Development"
Yes, Michael Cera can get more awkward. Because he was. When he was 15-years-old on this show in 2003. Based on hilarious misunderstandings and awkward moments in a very dysfunctional family that includes Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, and Portia de Rossi, you’ll cringe and laugh at how wacky and weird these characters are.
7. "Bee Movie"
The main love-related plotline is that a human woman is attracted to a bee. While you are watching this movie, please think about that fact and then think about how inappropriate it is in light of it for anyone to oppose the production of a movie about same-sex couples and same-sex love. The heterosexual love story can only be told in so many ways and clearly, people were running out of ideas in 2007.
Given the number of sequels, prequels, and remakes in the movie market today, that trend continues. This is a reminder to support LGBTQ as well as independent and experimental films.
