Who does't love Netflix and serial killers? And not necessarily in that order.
"The Confession Tapes" is one of Netflix's newest documentary series about serial killers but with a unique spin. Each episode follows a different murder mystery that follows the case from start to finish, going over the injustices made by the investigators, lawyers, and judges.
Format of the Show
The formatting itself was interesting on its own. Instead of jumping around with dramatizations of the crime, the focus was on what actually happened. With flashes of pictures from the crime scene and videos of the confession itself, it allows for you to watch and feel like you are following the case in real time.
Each interview showed the emotions and connections that they had with the suspects as well as the victims. The closing interviews included what essentially was a "where are they now" involving their connections with the suspects, including one of them having a wedding inside the prison and visiting every weekend.
Synopsis of Episodes 1 and 2
They follow a triple homicide of nearly an entire family and the main persons of interest are the family's teenage son and his best friend. Both were excellent students and had been good friends for years. One night, they went out for dinner and a movie, and when they returned, it was a bloodbath.
After months of being questioned and investigated, and all the evidence still conveniently leading to them, Canadian officials used a method banned in the United States. They had two officers go undercover and pose as members of the mafia, eventually getting a confession out of the two teens.
After being arrested, the trial itself took years due to one of the boys having an affair with his lawyer, delaying the case and making the court system essentially start from scratch.
Going forward with the sentencing, both where given three life sentences without the possibility of parole.
