If you've been on social media at all in the last couple of weeks, then you have probably heard about Netflix's newest documentary, "Cheer." You're probably thinking, "Well, why would I want to watch a show about some random cheerleading squad that I've never heard of?"
1. It shows that there is much more to cheerleading than a cute uniform and pom-poms.
In the past, cheerleading has been disrespected, especially with many not accepting that it is a sport. "Cheer" does a great job of showing just how dangerous and strenuous the sport is. It doesn't disregard the part of cheerleading that is wearing makeup and finding the perfect uniform, rather it exemplifies the importance and balance of both sides of it.
2. Monica is the embodiment of a good coach.
She offers the kind of tough love and support we all need. Monica takes kids from many different backgrounds and gives them a secure place and a family.
But despite the huge love she has for the team, she doesn't put up with laziness or bad behavior. She might come across as a little harsh at first, but she wouldn't be a 13 (possibly 14)-time NCA winner if she wasn't.
3. It's real.
In a world full of ridiculous and fake reality television, it's refreshing to watch something authentic. No retakes, touch-ups, or induced drama. Just tears, sweat, and cheer catastrophes.
4. It highlights the importance of teamwork.
While most sports do compete with teams, they don't require you to put your life in someone else's hands. Cheerleading, on the other hand, does. The show really emphasizes how necessary good teamwork and communication with your team is, in life and on the mat.
5. Jerry, just Jerry.
He is the epitome of what a cheerleader should be. He is spirited, positive, uplifting, and overall the kind of person you'd want to be best friends with. His mat-talk is something everyone should listen to when they're struggling.
6. It's relatable.
Netflix did such a great job of capturing the heartache and happiness that come from being on a team. They made sure to show that the people who everyone wants to be are still real people. For this reason, the show has impacted many lives already, and it could impact yours if you let it. But if not, just know that you're missing out on a lot of nostalgia, happy tears, and good smiles.
