The internet is an important part of practically everyone’s daily life. From checking the news online in the morning to streaming movies, a reliable source of internet is required to do these things. My internet is the same as the person’s next door, it is equal. Without net neutrality, we will have to pay for services that we have now.
The people are against this, at least the majority of internet users are. If net neutrality is repealed, internet providers will have control on the speed of your internet and what websites you can use by enforcing a fee. Some providers won’t even let you go onto websites at all. We live in an era that requires equal internet usage on all aspects. It not only would stop websites from getting the attention they deserve, but it would hurt the economy as well.
Anti-net neutrality will allow big corporate businesses to put more money into their pockets while the average American will have to pay even more than they do now for the bandwidth that they had in early 2000. You can say goodbye to streaming Netflix for $9 a month, as the prices will be raised from Netflix, and then the rates you will have to pay to even be able to stream Netflix by your provider will be not worth it.
This is about more than just not being able to stream your binge-worthy TV shows. Artwork will not be able to be showcased, jobs will not be broadcasted. Your internet provider will be able to dictate what news you get, curbing your opinions. "Twitter do your thing" and Instagram stories won't be a thing anymore. No more widespread facts about our governmental issues or worldwide issues that our news stations don't cover.
As a student, this is going to hurt my fellow students and I even more. For those of us struggling financially to pay for school, having to pay to do school work, study, or attend online courses will cause even more of a strain.
We need to support and protect a free and open internet. The internet isn't just social media.
