My Hair Does Not Define Who I Am

If you don't change every once in a while, you begin to blend in.

My hair does not define who I am. It does not define my beauty, nor does it change who I am if I change it.

I’ve never really been one to be afraid of change when it comes to haircuts. I am the one who is more adventurous and tries a new trend each time I go to the salon. However, this time is different. I’ve made a huge change in my hair.

Just because I am now bald, does not mean that I am not beautiful.

I have realized how extremely lucky I am to have the opportunity to be able to grow my hair long and strong. Not many people can say they have that luxury. There are people in the world today who would kill to have their own hair, but they can’t, whether it be something they are born with or something that is caused by illness or medication.

I realize there are some people who may not agree with my decision, nor do they understand why exactly I have made this decision. I am constantly told that I am doing this to “fit in” or to “be cool”, but I’m not. I am doing this because of the way I was brought up.

As a child, I was taught to be kind to others, to share with others, and to never judge a book by its cover. I shaved my head for the children. I did this for the children who do not have the luxury of having long hair or any hair for that matter. I did this because it means that they have the opportunity to fit in with society, even if it means that I stand out.

There you have it. You may not agree with my decision. That is completely and utterly okay. But that’s just it, it’s my decision. There is no amount of bribery in the world that will make me change my mind about what I've done. You can say it will look weird, and that I won't look right with a bald head. In the end, it is my decision.

My hair DOES NOT define who I am as a person. Hair or no hair, I am still the same person I was before. I want to get the point across that hair is an outer extremity of your body; it grows back. It does not define who you are. It does not define whether or not you are beautiful.

You are beautiful with or without hair.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
