It's been a good week. The highlight of mine was actually being able to leave the house without a jacket on. Spring might finally be upon us, and I can say it's about damn time.
This week was good for another reason as well. Abel Tesfaye, better known to his fans as The Weeknd dropped a surprise new album. The album, titled "My Dear Melancholy" is a six-song album dedicated to the most loyal of The Weeknd fans. When he first debuted on the music scene in 2011 with his mixtape, "House of Balloons," he immediately grabbed the ear of music fans. His style and voice were unique, evoking a range of feelings from happiness to straight depression. His debut album, "Trilogy," was a combination of his first three mixtapes and that album solidified him as a force.
The Weeknd had become America's songbird and was starting to draw comparisons to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.
The album, as the most dedicated fans would say, is Abel getting back to his "old self." Not everyone was encouraging his last album "Starboy." He wasn't as emotional, but he was more vibrant. He wasn't making songs for you to cry to, but songs for you to groove to.
Personally, I didn't think it was the sound we were accustomed to, but it was necessary for him to grow as an artist. Songs like "Starboy" and "I Feel it Coming" were really good and showed another side to Abel. As fans, we want it all, we want artists to listen to our demands, though it's not always the case. With "My Dear Melancholy," Abel has satisfied the thirst of his most loyal following, including one LeBron James, by showing us what made him a star in the first place.
One of the songs that stood out to me on the album is "Wasted Times," it's a quick reversion to the hurtful state that produced some of Abel's classic songs. He shows his emotions in the lyrics, where he appears to be appealing to an ex about their past life. I say he's talking about Bella Hadid, you know his ex-supermodel girlfriend. As a matter of fact, I wonder how many hits are based on their relationship. He also shows off his crazy vocals on "Try Me," a classic love song.
The album is the perfect blend of quality and quantity. It may only be six songs, but you'll find yourself playing some songs over and over. For me, I couldn't just play it all the way through. I found myself trying to hear certain lyrics over again, as well as whole songs on repeat.
I don't think anyone would really dislike the album, unless they're fans of other music honestly.
When artists debut, they are usually associated with the sound that they debuted with. The Weeknd's sound is not any one genre, or theme. He can be dark in some songs, unleash an alternative sound in the next instance and make you want to get up and dance the next.
After Trilogy, we connected his music by the feelings it gave us. Though it was unannounced, "My Dear Melancholy" is excellent work from a musical genius. His combination of emotions, vocal range and vintage style lends itself to another masterpiece. I would say Abel is back, but that would indicate he went somewhere.
