There are always those movies that get better and better each time you watch them. Rewatching is not a chore, but a comfort. You get excited to share your love of the movie with the people you care about and annoyed when they don't seem to be appreciating the story as much as you do. Something about certain works of art touch us in a very personal and familiar way, and we never lose our love for them, whether they be in the form of movie, book, poem, visual art or song. This is the way I feel about one of my favorite movies, "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind."
Since we're all home anyways, suffering through this quarantine, for the next few weeks I'll share some of my most beloved forms of entertainment and art. "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," is a love story, but it's not the one you might expect. Starring Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, the movie has a kind of dry, low-key humor that you need to pay close attention to in order to catch. The whole movie demands your attention, it is not a movie for background noise or superficial entertainment. The plot skips around in time and follows the relationship of Joel and Clementine, two seemingly opposite young adults. Where Clementine is extraverted, adventurous, bold, and sometimes over the top, Joel is reserved, quiet, thoughtful and at times a little judgmental.
When the two break up, Clementine impulsively uses a medical service to erase Joel from her memory. When Joel finds out about her decision, he too is resolved to erase Clementine and their tumultuous relationship from his memory forever. However, once the process begins, Joel is reminded of his love for Clementine and desperately attempts to hide his memories of Clementine from the doctors who have already begun the job of erasing them. The movie moves backwards in time, exploring their relationship, the good, the bad, and even the humiliating. Meanwhile, Joel's memories continue to disintegrate.
The movie is funny and absolutely lovely, a story that will pull sharply on your heartstrings. It is also beautifully shot, a true artistic achievement. It is perfect for any afternoon as long as you don't mind a roller coaster of emotions. No matter how many times I watch "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," my love for it only grows.
