I find musicals to be the best genre of movie, and so, it’s not surprising that some of my favorite movies are musicals too. Not only do they have intriguing plots, but they also have soundtracks that will play in your head for the next week after watching them. The fact that the story can be portrayed traditionally through the movie and through the soundtrack makes the message mean that much more. Honestly, it’s the best of both worlds. Because of this, I want to share some of my favorite movies, and some overall catchy movies too.
1. Les Misérables (2012)
This is my absolute favorite musical and it’s not hard to figure out why. The story alone in this movie is so complex and compelling that it leaves an impression on you. Then there’s the soundtrack that is so filled with emotion, talent, and skill that it evokes emotion in anyone who hears it.
2. The Greatest Showman (2017)
This is the last movie I watched in theaters in 2017 and it was hands-down the best film I saw of that year. Every part of this musical draws the audience in and gets them invested in it. My whole family loves it. The music is so catchy and emotional and builds on the story that it is a musical masterpiece in my eyes.
3. Moulin Rouge! (2001)
This movie is so iconic and spectacular that it begs to be remembered and adored. The love story in this movie is so sweet and the song mash-ups are so good that they redefine how you remember the original songs.
4. Across the Universe (2007)
The Beatles, need I say more? This isn’t the only musical on this list that incorporates songs from a single group, but the way the songs blend into the story and vice versa is so effortless and beautiful is something to be admired.
5. Mamma Mia! (2008)
This musical of songs from the group ABBA has become a constant favorite for my family. You can’t get the songs out of your head, and you won’t want to. The song selections work well with the story, but there is still an element of “bursting into song”. It’s a fun musical with a heartfelt message that’s easy to watch again and again.
6. Burlesque (2010)
The songs and story of this musical are set up a bit differently as all the songs are performances in the movie. Every song is an expected part of the story, but their range of emotion and passion make them a great variety. Not to mention that Cher and Christina Aguilera have powerhouse voices.
7. High School Musical (2006)
It’s everyone’s not-so-guilty pleasure. Sometimes you just want to escape your reality and jam to Disney channel tunes. Sure, you can’t help but cringe when you watch it, but that’s part of the fun, right?
