I'm Sorry, Mom, But I Can't Watch 'The Soaps' Anymore

There's only so many times someone can die and come back to life.

Recently, my mom has been really into watching Soap Operas such as Days of Our Lives and The Young and The Restless. I am happy she’s found shows that she enjoys, but I can’t stand to watch them with her. From her yelling at the TV to the dramatic music, I can’t take it anymore. I simply don’t like them and the unrealistic scenarios that occur in them. Much to my dismay, my mom still believes these shows are the best things ever. Mom, I’m sorry, but here are 10 reasons why I can’t watch soap operas.

1. The music

The most annoying aspect to me is the music. In soap operas, there’s no music until something happens. From there, it’s only super dramatic music that makes the situation seem so much more serious than it is.

2. The cinematography

Soap opera cinematography is very distinct. The lighting is darker and there are very dramatic camera angles. When I see these techniques, I know to stay away.

3. The reactions

The worst part about watching these shows with my mom is her reactions. Soap operas beg an audible reaction from their audiences, a reaction that annoys all others around them.

4. The actors

First, the acting is horrible. Second, the actors all are unrealistically beautiful, no matter their age.

5. The action

In soap operas, everything that could possibly go wrong goes wrong. Whether it’s having an evil twin that replaces you or finding out your brother’s best friends’ cousin is back from the dead, it will happen.

6. The twist endings

Along with the dramatic action, come twist endings. These endings are usually very predictable and are so cheesy, they make me cringe.

7. The continuity

Every episode is based on the previous episode. You can’t just sit down and enjoy watching a single episode because you won’t understand what’s happening. You can’t binge-watch the entire thing either, though, because there are too many episodes to do so.

8. The addictiveness

I think I may be immune to the addictiveness of soap operas, but I know many people aren’t. People need to know what will happen next and make plans to watch the next episode to find out.

9. The unchanging cast

These shows have been on the air for years, yet the cast doesn’t change. Give me some variety, please.

10. They never end

As I said above, these shows have been on for years. In addition, there is no end in sight. Watching soap operas is too much of a commitment for me.

I’m sorry, Mom, but I’ve tried, and I just can’t do it. Soap operas are not for me and I hope maybe you’ll find something else to watch soon.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
