As a political science major and an all around politics-enthusiast, I couldn’t stop myself from writing a politically-themed article the week of the presidential election. As much as I’d love to go on a heated rant about all of my thoughts and feelings about this election, I am going to lift all of our spirits in these dark times and talk about how great millennials are for stressing the importance of voting in this election. Here’s how millennials are killing it this election season. Yay for political participation!
1. Programs like Rock the Vote
Rock the Vote, an organization that has registered more than 1.5 million youth voters this year alone, uses pop culture, music, art and technology to simplify voter registration and election processes. Celebrities like Beyoncé, Shawn Mendes, Kendall Jenner, and Ariana Grande have been helping to “rock the vote” since 1990.
2. We're Passionate About the Issues
Student debt has become more of an issue in this election than it had been in any previous elections and many millennials have taken interest in this issue. According to a poll done by The Atlantic, the other main issues that young adults care about include creating jobs, helping the poor, retirement security for seniors, reducing pollution, and rights for workers and consumers. Passion about these issues causes millennials to encourage peers to vote.
3. We Know About Our Power and We're Not Afraid to Use It
Millennials cast the decisive votes in the 2008 AND 2012 elective to elect the first African-American president, and then reelect him. And at the rate we're registering young adult voters, it seems that our influence is going to matter in this election, too.
4. We Know What We Want (And What We Don't Want), and We'll Do Whatever We Can to Get It
This is one of the most polarizing elections we've ever had, and millennials aren't exempt from these extreme views. We know exactly what we want in a presidential candidate, and for that reason, we also know what we don't want. Obviously, we're going to encourage everyone we know to vote in order to get the outcome we want and to avoid the one we don't want.
5. We're Using Social Media to Spread the Word About Voting
Let your parents and grandparents know that the 'Internet Age' isn't all bad. Millennials are all over social media encouraging friends to register and vote. It's never been more embarrassing to admit that you're not voting, because now more than ever, young adults know how important a vote is. Our future is at stake here!
Election day is November 8. Get out and vote.
