Mariah Carey is still ruling the charts three decades after her debut. She has earned a record nineteen number one songs on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The most recent number one, "All I Want For Christmas Is You," topped the chart last Christmas through the new year. This made Carey the first solo artist to top the Hot 100 chart in four separate decades.
However, Mariah's most essential work isn't just the hit singles. It also includes deep cuts and underrated singles. I recently wrote about Carey's top five essential tracks. Here are five more that are worth checking out.
5. Outside
From 1997's "Butterfly," this song tackles the subject of feeling like an outsider. It's a topic Mariah and many of her fans can relate to. Carey has said this song was written about her being biracial.
4. Runway
This song was only released as a bonus track on the Japanese edition of "Caution." The lyrics have a motivational message that is classic Mariah. It also features a sample from Carey's song "Butterfly."
3. Breakdown (feat. Krayzie Bone & Wish Bone)
This is one of the underrated singles from Carey's "Butterfly" album. The song features Krayzie Bone and Wish Bone from Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.
2. Bliss
A deep cut from 1999's "Rainbow" album, this sensual song is one of Carey's best. It also gives Mariah a perfect opportunity to show off her signature whistle register.
1. Make It Happen
A classic hit from 1991's "Emotions" album, this song details Carey's rise to stardom. The inspiring lyrics would become a common theme throughout much of her future work.
