An Open Letter to My Grandpa
Margaret Whittel

Grandfathers are a touchy topic for me these days. I recently lost one and it is hard to think that he isn't there anymore. I have one living and he is the most important person in the world to me. When I was two years old he decided to become a Roman Catholic priest, I know shocker right? Who knew it could happen?

He is what they call a second career priest and that means that he had a family and a career before he decided to devote the rest of his life to the man upstairs. It also means that we have to share holidays or do them before the actual holiday. For instance on Christmas we have it the Sunday before Christmas every year. It can be very tricky to plan family parties because we have to revolve it around his schedule now.

Five years ago in a few months we almost lost my grandpa he had a severe heart condition that requires him to wear a pump to control the blood flow to his heart. The pump was a short term solution for a long time, but they have been doing studies and they show that the pump can be used as a permanent solution for people who are not eligible for a transplant.

September 23,2011 is a day that I don't take lightly it is the day that my amazing caring and wonderful grandpa had the surgery that saved his life for the better. Now he is able to be the grandpa that he was before and he will soon get to baptize his GREAT GRANDSON, a day that we never thought would happen. This will he very surreal for my family because he gets to do something we never thought possible.

My grandpa has a profession that many people say how do you have that profession. There are extra special circumstances to why he is a priest. My grandpa was a deacon for 25 years and then when my grandma died it was her dying wish that my grandpa join the priesthood and he did that. He has been a priest for 13 years and he absolutely loves it. I can't even imagine my life any different without the most smiley , funny, and all around nicest guy.

I LOVE YOU SO MUCH!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
